Spring has sprung here and yesterday afternoon I went for my favorite walk (great exercise) around Acropolis and ancient agora. Here are some of the photos with details from some old neoclassical houses which survived through our days. In Greece, by the construction of the Royal Palace in 1847 up the transition to new architectural styles of the early twentieth century, during a period of about seventy years they were produced innumerable antefixes in a variety that probably exceeds the two thousand designs all over Greece. The clay surface of the antefix was decorated in various forms such as Medousa, Hermes, Zeus or floral motifs like palm leaf (anthemion = palmette), the leaf of acanthus with combinations or variations of these. Afterwards, with the prevalence of concrete as the main building material and modernism as mainstream in architecture, the antefixes gradually began to descend from the roofs and end up as debris in landfills, along with the unique architectural masterpieces which they crowned. The most fortunate of them ended up in knackers� yard and from there passed into the interior of the houses as decoration and collectibles, samples of an era permanently lost for this country. If the existence of an antefix on a roof or even on the shelf of a bookcase is a matter of chance, then having an antefix and the beauty that emits around, can be considered luck. The left and right photos at the bottom of the page decorate the top of our bookcase. In the past they decorated the roof of the house of one of my husband�s aunt. She gave her house in a construction company to build a 6 floor building. Now she has 3 apartments instead of one house, but she hasn't the jewel she had before. This practice destroyed the beauty of old Athens. STUFFED EGGPLANTS IN LINE

Description}: Melitzanes Papoutsakia or Stuffed Eggplants Ingredients for 4-5 servings 4-5 medium eggplants 1/2 kilo ground beef 3 green onions, chopped 1 medium onion, grated 1/2 cup chopped parsley 2 cups canned tomatoes or fresh chopped ripe tomatoes salt pepper 1/2 cup oil 1 egg 3 tablespoons cream 1 1/2 cup b�chamel sauce and 2 egg yolks 1 cup grated Parmesan 12 thin slices of tomato freshly ground pepper Preparation Wash and dry the eggplants, trim off stems, and cut in half, lengthwise. Sprinkle them with some salt and let them stand for 1 hour. Wash them well and tighten them between your palms, leaving all the excess water. Lightly saut� the eggplant halves in olive oil in a frying pan. Start with a little olive oil (5 tablespoons) but have more at hand since eggplant absorbs a lot of oil and the pan could dry out. This step is simply to soften the eggplant a bit, so saut� quickly on both sides, remove, and place the eggplant halves on the bottom of a baking or roasting pan. You can also fry them in a Deep fryer as I do. In a saucepan, heat the oil and saut� the onions to turn translucent (without browning). Stir in the ground beef and saut� until it starts to brown. Stir in tomatoes, parsley, garlic, pinches of salt and pepper (to taste), and reduce heat. Simmer covered for 20 minutes or until the sauce melds and the liquid is absorbed. Remove from the heat, and set aside to cool slightly. Whisk the egg with the cream. Pour and stir into the ground beef mixture. Press the eggplants lengthwise in the center with a spoon to make a dent and spoon 2-3 tablespoons of filling in each. Smooth the surface with a spatula and spoon over the b�chamel sauce (about 1 tablespoon for each piece), and place a slice of tomato on top. When all the eggplants are finished, sprinkle the remaining Parmesan and freshly ground pepper. Cook on the lowest oven rack setting, at 180 Celcious until the b�chamel is browned, the cheese on top is browned, and the eggplants are soft, 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Remove the eggplants from the pan with a spatula and serve warm. Description}: Hellas known as Greece The colors of my country are the blue and white. Blue like its sky and sea and white like the foam of the waves. Our flag is blue and white like them and the nine stripes represent the waves. In the past nine syllables were written on every stripe. The syllables of the words: E-lef-the-ri-a e Tha-na-tos� that means Freedom or Death. Blue is my favorite color too. I love my country�s history that goes 5000 years back, I love its blue shores and its healthy cuisine that is consisted of fishes, vegetables and fine olive oil. I love and admire many countries in the world, but I couldn�t live in one of them for a long time. We, Greeks, call our country �Garden of God�. The name comes from the following anecdote. When God created the world, he called humans to choose a place on the earth where they would like to live. Every group of people chose their land and went there to live. Late at night and while God was ready to go to bed, Greeks, who always do everything the last minute, knocked His door. God answered them that they arrived late and he hadn�t any more land for them. Greeks insisted so much, that in the end God tired said to them: �OK stop! I have kept one little piece of land for myself to be my garden. Take it and let me rest�. This garden of God is very rich and many times into its long history became victim of pillage from neighbors and not neighbors. Description}: I loved that fun message on the wall of a Facebook friend and it ended up in this page. The message reads: "And�. tell me again in December that it�s cold and that you wished the Summertime!" High temperatures during summer are usual here. The average temperature in summer varies between 33 to 37 Celsius and some days it raises to 40 � 42. This summer, however, is one of the hottest I can remember. Temperature ranged between 37 � 42 degrees for July and August without any cool break. Another hot summer was that of 1987 when the temperature rose to 45 degrees. That heat wave lasted 10 days and 1300 people died from the heat. They were old people with health problems. One of them was my father, who suffered from his heart and the heat caused him a fatal stroke. Since then all houses in Greece, buses, taxis and public buildings have air conditions. Description}: Athens, capital of Greece, locates in Attica region, a basin, surrounded by seven mountains. I live at the foothill of Hymettus, one of the mountains and 5 kms. away from Syntagma Square, the central square of Athens. I love walking and my two favorite places are Plaka, the old part of Athens and the second one is the Aesthetic forest of Hymettus. Here are some pics from my walks. In the big photo, a partial view of Athens from Hymettus, with Acropolis hill and Saint George Lycavitos Hill in the distance. The middle photo, partial view of Hymettus Mountain and the photo was taken from Saint George Lycavitos hill and in the third photo my husband, son and I, in one of our walks on the mountain.
