Journaling: Chuck and I stayed at the Red Maple Inn in Burton for his birthday - a wonderful and relaxing weekend. We walked, watched maple sugaring, had coffee at a cool coffee shop/antique store, read, played pool, visited Lake FarmPark and just generally had a great time. I love you, Chuck. I was so glad to get home and collapse into my own bed! Journaling: SGIA 2010 October 11 - 15: Very busy week - from 4 am Monday until 11:45 pm on Friday – at the SGIA trade show in Las Vegas. Installed graphics at the Convention Center after we arrived on Monday. Had dinner with Vickie and Tom at the hotel (the Las Vegas Hilton) Monday night. Every day started at 7:30 am with a breakfast meeting, ran through seminars, booth duty and customer meetings, and then collapse into bed. I only had my P&S, not that it mattered, and had about 20 minutes to spend on the net one night. Not a bad week, but I wish I had more time to be a tourist. Of all the beautiful gorges in Hocking Hills State Park, Conkle’s Hollow is probably my favorite. It doesn’t have the best waterfall, the largest cave, or the longest gorge. What it does have is a sense of the passage of time. The gorge begins where the Hollow’s stream enters a larger waterway. The path, smooth and flat, is easily accessible by wheelchair. Wildflowers and deciduous trees give way to fern and hemlock. It’s quiet – we hear only birds, wind in the trees, and the tiny stream which carved this deep gorge from Blackhand sandstone. The accessible path ends abruptly at a slump block, where we pass through a narrow opening into a prehistoric forest. The quiet deepens, the green darkens, and the air is damp and still. We walk past a water fall, a cave, rock walls thick with fern, moss and lichens. At the very end of the gorge, we find a narrow waterfall, tumbling through a key hole cut into the rock. Evening comes early in this primeval canyon and we must leave. I want to stay and wait to see some ice age creature emerge from the shadows. Ziplining definitely qualifies. I hate heights and speed, so ziplining was the perfect (nuts!) choice for a break in the Hocking Hills hiking and photography we did this week. What was I thinking? We started with two “bunny zips” of 150 and 200 feet, then progressed to 400 and 500 footers. Braking is done with leather-gloved hands - very challenging at 40 mph +. Not to mention that my brain ceases to function at altitudes over 5’ 5”. Fortunately (or not...), once you start the course, there’s no way back. Tina and John brought Wookie, Gary and Marge brought Smoky and Kloe, and Marco put up with them all. No dogs got snacks from the dinner table -honest! Marco looks a little pensive, probably because dinner is over and the snacks are gone! Kloe wore Smoky and Marco out. I didn't get a pic of Wookie, but he looks a lot like Kloe, only whiter with a little bit longer hair. He and Kloe are best buds now. Kloe is eight months old, and fearless about attacking Smoky, who's about six times her size. Mom and Marco - Yeah, that's the hopeful snack face. Gary and Marge - cute couple! An Oceanographer! An Artist! An Archeologist! I want to live in a house by the ocean, built of wood and glass, and watch the storms roll in. Dreaming of gorgeous horses – the Black, the Red, Misty, the Godolphin Arabian. I want a room of my own – sorry, baby brother John, you have to join the rest of the brothers upstairs in GI Joe heaven. 20: Still want to be an artist, but majoring in Biology because it’s more “practical” and I love field bio. Still dreaming of the wood and glass house by the ocean. Getting good grades and extracurriculars consume my days and causes insomnia at night. 30: Dreaming of having an employed husband, being a writer, having a happy life. Not happening. The wood and glass house turns into a bi-level on a pond, and a back yard full of baby geese, a couple of beavers and a muskrat – love it! Horses canter through my dreams and into my life. 40: Two years divorced, house of my own, good job. Dreaming of getting a promotion, dating, writing. Dreaming of winning horseshows, sweating, training, grooming, practice and more practice, and a wall full of ribbons and trophies to show for it. 50: Not dreaming any more. The insomnia disappears with the end of a bad marriage. The sun is shining, my house, my horse, my time, my family and friends, my savings, my safe, unbruised body, all mine to cherish. And the reservoir where I walk several times each week is filled with wild swans. Today: I have a beautiful house - Every year, Grandma Wilk’s peonies bloom around the deck. The back yard is filled with critters, deer tracks, nesting robins, amazing bugs. Snappers and frogs wander in from the marsh, herons stop by for a snack, stilty young killdeer tiddle across the cul-de-sac. The cat is suitably eccentric and the horse still loves trail riding. I have a cool camera and wellies and people to go shooting with. My girlfriends are strong and quirky. And my Honey has the bluest eyes and a good heart. Wow! 52 weeks of photo, and I'm so glad I stuck with it. What I Learned - I understand the D60 a lot better - Using the white balance more effectively - 3 focus points are not enough - Slowly getting a grip on exposure compensation - Composition – it’s better if you get it in the camera, but usually salvageable if not. - Creative processing can salvage crappy shots - and it’s fun! - Faster and more effective processing Pros - Understanding the D60 - Nice to have a record of 2009 - Photographed things I wouldn’t normally, some successful, some not - Speeded up processing - Discipline of shooting everyday - Discipline of getting my shots up on the blog and onto Flickr - The constant learning process - Meeting fellow photographers IRL and on the Web Cons - I still don’t feel like I’m getting the “art” of photography - Time needed to shoot, process, blog and annotate - Seriously cut down on my non-P365 scrapping time Plans for 2010 - Shoot every day as much as possible - Steady progress on my Kent project - Finish the D60 Magic Lantern DVDs - Participate in two photography workshops - Participate in as many CVPS Photowalks and critiques as possible - Getting shots I’m proud to post in appropriate Flickr groups - Get closer to the sublime I recognize in the works of others, and every once in a while, in my own Katie Pertiet Color Challenge 010310 and Classic Cardstock Autumn Ice.
