Happy Anniversary

Description}: Journaling: I�m not sure we thought that we�d ever see this day but today you reached an HUGE milestone in the world of epilepsy. You hit two years without any seizure activity. It�s been the goal since the beginning - over 7 years ago. Because if you can go two years without a seizure, it means that there�s a chance that you will outgrow it. It�s the anniversary that neurologists all wait for and it�s the goal of all epilepsy patients. And we really never thought you�d get there. This past month you and I have been very quietly counting down. Neither one of us spoke about it very much and I think we were both afraid of jinxing it. You�d mention it and then walk away. I�d ask you how you felt about it and you didn�t really want to talk about it. And then the day arrived. June 11, 2013. And you had done it. Really, truly done it and now you can start a whole other countdown - the countdown to possibly tapering off your meds. You opted to stay on them for another year but the difference is that now it is YOUR choice. And that it HUGE. I have never been so proud of you. Journaling: We all went to Chris� graduation party and none of us really knew anyone other than Chris and his parents and maybe a couple of the other kids. Most of the other valedictorians were there playing volleyball and we hadn�t met many of them yet. But that didn�t stop Andrew! From Here to There

Description}: LOVE Carol's story challenges!! Thanks for the prompt, Carol. :) Journaling: This year has been incredibly eventful for the kids. Among other things, Andrew�s Lego team beat all the odds and ended up winning second at the state competition, Emily�s SSASB team won the state championship with a perfect score, and Libby earned two gold medals at her very first ISSMA competition. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. When I say that it�s been eventful and busy, that really is a massive understatement. And I am so grateful that I had the free time to be there with the kids through all of their successes. It�s an honor to parent them and volunteer with their teams and drive them everywhere. I can�t imagine what I will do when they�re out of the house. And that�s the dilemma. There are only three more years with them all in the house and I see other parents and friends all around me sending their kids off to college. And I start to panic at even the thought. Because then what? I don�t know how to suvive without them. What will I do? I have been incredibly lucky to be home with them for most of the past eight years. I wouldn�t trade any part of it for the world. And I have no doubt that I will look back on these years as the best part of my life and it�s all been about them - volunteering at their schools, as their coaches or team volunteers, as their driver and chauffeur, and their extremely proud supporter and audience member. But what do I do after they�re gone? How does a parent plan how to live without their kids? Because that�s what I have to do. It�s what we all have to do. But it doesn�t come naturally to me. At least not yet. But I know I must start planning and very soon. I need to be more than a mom. As much for their sake as for my sake. It�s not fair to them to panic at the thought of them leaving - it is my duty to them to show them how to move on and grow and adapt to change. How to get from here to there. Description}: After I did this, I realized that it would also fit the color spots challenge. :) Journaling: This is a photo that we thought might never happen. We hadn�t seen my mother in over two years and, at times, thought that it would be much, much longer before we would see her again. But she came to visit for four days over Memorial Day weekend and she took the girls and I to the mall for manicures. The girls loved it and I was moved by the time spent together. Emily was so excited and took this picture of our hands afterwards. And I love what it captures. Headed to Prom

Description}: Journaling: Emily and Chris were such good sports about taking prom photos - they let Chris� mom and me follow them around Beutter Park for almost an hour. They were so cute together and had fun walking around even though they probably got tired of the posing. And I know they were relieved when it was time for them to leave for dinner before they went to prom. And this ended up being my favorite photo of the entire day. Chris had helped Emily into the car and they were just pulling away when they looked over and saw me still taking photos. They smiled and waved and just looked so happy to be together. Making Studying Fun

Journaling: The goal of ASB is to allow students to compete in academics similar to the way they would compete in athletics. And the main objective is to honor intellectual and academic achievement and celebrate scholarship. Mr. De Kever fully embraces these goals and objectives but takes them one step further - he shows the team that studying can be fun. And Emily has taken all of this to heart this year in a very big way! She loves her highlighters (enough that she Instagrammed them) and has learned to use them very effectively during groundpounding. She bakes cookies or muffins for many of their practices, started a morning ritual of meeting Chris in the IMC to study before school, and started the tradition of having the team over to our house every Friday night for an extra practice in a fun and more-relaxed environment. And there are not many students who can claim that Sundays are their favorite days of the week because they get to study for three hours. But Emily can! Sunday practices at Mr. De Kever�s house are her favorites and she can�t wait to get there. And driving her and Ye Jee there has become a lot of fun for me, too. It�s been such a huge joy watching her learn to make studying fun and learn that there really are a lot of other students out there that enjoy it as much as she does. The last week

Description}: Another page for Emily's academic team album. Working my way towards getting up the courage to scrap the state championship. ;) Journaling: The last week of practice before State was very intense. It started on Sunday morning when the South Bend Tribune came out with a front-page story about the Regionals Competition. Our phones started ringing very early and rang all day long with everyone telling us that Emily was in the paper. It was so fun to celebrate their Regionals win but there was also no mistaking the pressure that was on them for State. The last Sunday practice was very intense with Mr. De Kever leading the team around his yard and giving them a tour of all the trees he has planted in honor of his past State Championships. It ended with Emily barely holding it together and then sobbing the entire way home. And then five days of practice - each with some special significance like the cookies from Mr. De Kever�s mother and the ice cream from his father. It was a big, big week filled with a lot of hope and anticipation. It's All So Very Good

Description}: Another page for Emily's academic team album. Journaling: This meet was so important to the team. Not only did they need to win it but they needed to have one of the top 7 scores in the state (out of 83 schools) to qualify for the State Championship Meet. Em had been told that she likely wouldn�t be on varsity for this meet. They would be relying only on the two seniors and one alternate. When the team walked into the auditorium, she looked very upset and so we were certain that she wouldn�t compete. Imagine our shock when she stood up with Chris M. and Ajith and got ready to head up onto the stage! Mr. De Kever told her right before the competition that she had earned that top spot!!! This was her dream! AND her dream team - Chris M., Ajith & her. And she did it!!! Emily, Chris M. & Ajith played the first 12 questions and it was very stressful. They missed the first two questions which stunned everyone. But they got their groove back and, after the first 12 questions, their score was a 10/12. When it was time to change players and Em walked off the stage, Mr. De Kever stood up to congratulate her and shake her hand. She had done it! Earned a spot on varsity during the Regionals Meet. We were all incredibly proud of her. It was such an honor for any student, let alone a freshman and she knew it. Her hard work totally paid off! The questions got harder and harder as they moved onto the second half and the auditorium was completely silent during each question. But in the end, the only questions the team missed were the first two and they easily won the meet with a score of 23/25. Thank goodness! But now the wait began - they had to wait until the next day for the scores from across the state to be tabulated and the top 7 to be announced. So all the team knew was that they won their Regionals Meet and then had to go home and wait. The rest of the night was a blur of waiting for the official announcement and the ribbons to be handed out. We chatted with Ajith�s mom and briefly with Chris M.�s mother. It is such a great group of kids and they have all become Emily�s best friends and family. We have gotten to know most of them as well and were so proud of the entire group. We took a lot of team photos (Madison is missing) and Mr. De Kever gave them a great pep talk at the end of the night. I think Emily would call it one of the best nights of her life. As a mother, it was certainly a highlight of mine to watch her and her teammates master so much information and earn that top spot. And the next day, we found out that not only did they qualify for the State Championship Meet but that they are ranked No. 1! It doesn�t get any better!!! Description}: Journaling: I really regret how few photos I have of Andrew�s 2012-2013 flag football season. The games are all inside at SoccerZone and there�s very thick plexiglass between the spectators and the field. It makes it very difficult to take photos. But during the very last game, I snuck around to the players� side and took as many photos as I could. And I was lucky enough to capture Andrew scoring a touchdown! And his teammates are even starting the celebration for him on the field. LOVE this! He did such a fantastic job on this team and we are so proud of how well he played, how well he listened to the coach, and how much sportsmanship he showed throughout the season. Napping Partners

Description}: Journaling: Tom works very long hours and most weekends. This past spring, he�s had trial after trial, plus his normal caseload and so he�s been working night and day seven days/week for weeks on end. When he is home, he eats and naps. I�ve tried for years to get him to nap upstairs so that his sleep won�t be interrupted but he refuses to. He likes to know that we�re around him, even if he�s sleeping so he naps either on the couch or on the floor. Often one of the kids will lay down beside him for a few minutes and then get up after he�s asleep. But his true napping partners are the animals. If he�s on the floor, Sawyer is guaranteed to be on top of him. And if he�s on the couch, Scout is the one on top of him and Sawyer sleeps right beside him on the floor. Becky hovers nearby at all times and usually ends up on the top of couch watching over him. But if there�s space and if Sawyer can�t get to her, she stretches out beside him. Watching him sleep with all the animals surrounding him is simultaneously one of the funniest things I see on a daily basis and also one of the coziest. Dwenger Invitational

Description}: Another page in Emily's Academic Team album. She can't take pics during the competition and I couldn't be at this meet so we had to rely on the photo in the newspaper and a photo I took of her first place ribbon. I have yet to convince her coach of the NEED for more photos. LOL. Journaling: The Dwenger Invitational was over two hours away and the team had to leave school early to get there on time. It was a long bus drive and they studied the entire drive. Right before the competition, Mr. De Kever announced the lineups and Emily was once again honored to find out that she was competing on the varsity team. This competition turned out to be much more stressful than the previous one, though. Emily and Sarah missed their very first question and became very scared from that moment on. They ended up missing 3/12 and went back to the stands and Emily cried while Chris M. and Chris Y. competed. They ended up winning with a score of 20/25 but the second place team scored 19/25 so it was very close and the entire team was upset. It was a long bus ride home after that but Emily had a great conversation with Mr. De Kever, Ajith, and Presto about their lives and futures. Some fun notes - at the competition, they met Father Jacob - a former Penn SSASB team member and currently a priest at Dwenger. That same day, Michele Weldy had been Emily�s substitute teacher in English and the day after that, Phil Weldy came to practice. Michele Weldy is considered one of the greatest captains in the team�s history and Phil and Father Jacob were great competitors as well. Emily had read about them all in Mr. De Kever�s books so she was very honored to meet them. A great teacher inspires

Description}: Another page for Emily's high school Academic Super Bowl album. Had to blur a lot of the content because it referenced other students. Journaling: There is nobody quite as influential as a good teacher. Parents can set an example and motivate their children but the encouragement and inspiration that comes from a great teacher is irreplaceable. And Emily has found that in Mr. De Kever. Early on in the Super Bowl season, Emily and Mr. De Kever formed a bond over their love of history. In early February before Emily knew that she had made varsity, he wrote her a letter and loaned her a copy of his book so that she could read about the history of the team and told her that she would one day captain the team. Little did he know that she had already read both books and captaining the team had been her goal from the start! And after her first varsity meet, he gave her a photo he took of her competing in her first varsity meet and wrote her a short card thanking her for her leadership, dedication, and enthusiasm. He�s a huge inspiration to her and these letters mean the world to her! Description}: Journaling: Sawyer has gone through so many issues with allergies over the past three years and the latest problem is a very severe ear infection. And so goes on the dreaded cone again. I know you hate it, I know it makes you so very sad. So sad that you don�t even chase Becky and suffer through the indignity of her actually sticking her nose in the cone to smell it. And you just closed your eyes at the indignity of it all. But I promise you that we will fix this. Saturday Scraplift Look at this!

Description}: I loved Carmel's inspiration layout and I was so excited to lift this one. The fading that she did was perfect for this series of photos - I mean, who really wants to see compost up close? ;) Journaling: My husband has a girlfriend and her name is THE COMPOST PILE. I even have to remind him sometimes to greet me first before he goes outside to check on her when he gets home. He takes her temperature, feeds her, covers her up, and pats her everyday. It�s become quite the family joke. :) In all seriousness, though, he is absolutely dedicated to saving the earth no matter how much teasing he gets and he has taught our children so many wonderful lessons about recyling, resourcefulness, and so many other environmental issues. Our children will grow up with an enormous respect for this earth they live on and that is all his doing. I admire him tremendously for his perserverance and dedication. Description}: Another one for Emily's Academic Team Album. And another time I forgot my camera and had to make due with my cell phone. Sigh. Journaling: Every Sunday afternoon, Emily�s Academic Super Bowl Team meets at Mr. De Kever�s house to study for three hours. While at his house, they groundpound for two hours and play whatever game has been assigned for that week for another hour. On the first Sunday practice session after their first meet, Emily brought Mr. De Kever a unique gift. In Ancient Greece, the victors of the Olympic Games would receive a lekythos of olive oil to celebrate their win. So in celebration of the team�s first place win at their first invitational of the season, Emily bought Mr. De Kever a bottle of olive oil to thank him for his leadership. He loved the gift, thanked her for it and hugged her. It was a great gift idea and was I was very proud of both her creativity and her thoughtfulness. Description}: Started Emily's academic team album. Some people love sports, some people love instruments...Emily loves academic competitions. :) This will probably be the intro to her Social Studies team section for her freshman year. Journaling: The Social Studies Academic Super Bowl Team is Emily�s favorite part of high school so far! This year�s theme is �The Glory That Was Greece� and the team meets after school and on Sundays to study together. We have all learned new study terms from her this year - �groundpounding� is the most-often used word to describe how they study. They read all the books through once, using yellow highlighters, followed by a second reading and orange highlighters, and a third reading with pink highlighters. The next colors are blue, green, and purple. They circle essential concepts in red pen and create review games for every Sunday practice. And she adores every single minute of it. Mr. De Kever inspires her daily and the two seniors on the team, Chris M. and Ajith, have become her mentors. Her goal is to captain the team for at least two years of high school. Warsaw Invitational

Description}: I think I'm going to make Emily an album for her Academic Teams. She had her first competition last night as a freshman and made varsity for the Social Studies team! ***ETA: And can you believe I forgot my camera? Ugh. Thank goodness for cell phones! Journaling: Mr. DeKever told Emily the morning of the first academic super bowl competition that not only had she earned a spot on the competition team but also that she would be on the varsity team. She was beyond thrilled!!! That has been her dream since the year started and I don�t think she ever really imagined that it would happen her freshman year. She competed with Ajith, Chris M, Chris Y and Sarah and together they scored 24/25 to take first place at the Warsaw Invitational. It made all of the after-school, late night, and weekend practices more than worth it. They are on their way to a state title and we are so proud of her and her teammates! Description}: My tribute page is a little late but only because I was honored to attend her memorial services this weekend. My heart is broken. :( Journaling: Dear Pattie, This is just so hard to write and I really don�t believe that I�ll never have another of your fabulous hugs or hear your laugh again but I wanted to thank you for your friendship. You first reached out to me six years ago about our girls and diabetes and we sent many, many emails back and forth about the worries that motherhood sometimes placed on us. And you sent me too many virtual hugs to count and assured me that all would be well. And it was. Our friendship continued and grew and meeting you in Disney was a highlight of the trip for me. Before we went to Vegas, you sent me an email out of the blue saying that I was �warm, funny and real � and I can�t WAIT to see you again. One of my great regrets about Disney was that I really didn�t feel like I saw much of you.� I don�t know if you had any idea how much that email meant to me. But we did spent a lot more time together in Vegas. Sitting on your bed with you and Lynnie and the rest of the group filled my heart up the brim and will forever be one of my favorite memories. And I know you did the same with others. You made us all feel like we had a special connection with you and that we had a special place in your heart. You even made a digital kit for me. Right after my family adopted our golden retriever puppy, you sent me a link to the brand new �Ruff �N Ready� Kit and said you made it with me in mind and that your Izzie had brought so much joy to your life and that you hoped that Sawyer brought the same joy to me. Comfy Baby

Description}: Journaling: Becky is only 4 1/2 months old and had a rough introduction to our house. It doesn�t help that her natural personality is quiet and timid. And Sawyer terrifies her. Not that I can blame her. If I was a 4-pound kitten and an 85-pound golden retriever chased me all around the house, I�d be terrified, too. But she�s slowly spending more downstairs with us and risking Sawyer�s presence more and more every day. One day last week, she spent a lot of time walking around the edges of the room, watching carefully for Sawyer every moment. At some point, she dared the couch and must have realized that being up higher was a bit safer. We found her like this a little while later - sound asleep on her back and snuggled in between the back of the couch and the couch cushion. Your first high school dance and your first time dressing up in a party dress and heels. So many emotions ran through my head when you came down the stairs ready to go - �Oh my god, how did she become this old?!�, �Her dress is absolutely perfect!�, �How is it possible that Emily is even in high school?�, �She is sooooooo beautiful!!!�, �Don�t cry, don�t cry, don�t make too much of a fuss�, �But she is so beautiful that I can�t even stand it� - and a whole lot more that really all came down to this - my baby has grown up and you are absolutely stunning and smart and funny and incredibly kind and have so much compassion and such a big heart and I feel like my own heart is going to explode out of my chest with how beautiful you are (inside and out) and how proud I am of you. Description}: I decided to choose a "One Little Word" this year. Journaling: DARE definition: 1 : to be sufficiently courageous to 2. : to have the courage to contend against, venture, or try 3 : to confront boldly story: This year I�d like to spend more time setting an example for my kids. For my girls, really. I�m constantly advising them to �use their words� and �be brave� and �stand up for yourself.� And yet I walk away from those situations myself. Not always but enough that it really bothers me. I almost chose the words �brave� or �voice� for this year but I changed my mind once I heard myself say �but I don�t dare� too many times. So �dare� it is. This year, I will dare to use my words and my voice.
