LOL!! :) I tried to keep it reasonable though. Those things that are close, that I'm going to do this year or within the next couple years. And, a few that are wishes that I'd like to do. One of these days I'm going to write down all those things on my bucket list. Even the things I know I'll never get to but sure sound cool to try. Ah, yes... memories of Christmases past... with a birthday right before Christmas, I always made sure Shannon's special day wasn't spoiled by Christmas festivities! Which made for many crazed, last-minute decorating! JOURNALING HOW IT WAS... HOW IT IS... DECEMBER... Shannon’s birthday on the 14th and Christmas 11 days later. I never wanted the excitement of Christmas to overshadow her special day, so I made the rule: No Christmas decor until after her birthday or birthday party, whichever came later. (I did bend to pressure and allow outside lights to be hung after Thanksgiving, but nothing else! Ha.) I remember scheduling parties around school break and soccer tournaments, so some years it was way early and some years it was really close to Christmas--the top photo was taken on December 19th! Yikes! Boy, did we scramble to get Christmas set up after the party girls left! But, that’s how it was. And, then one day... I can’t remember when... you wanted the tree decorated and all the Christmas decor to be set up over Thanksgiving weekend. Yes... before your birthday. And so, that’s how it is. (And I have to admit, it’s nice not freaking out on December 19th! *smiley*) ALL SUPPLIES FROM DESIGNER DIGITALS KATIE PERTIET Hello December Solids Paper Pack (charcoal gray background paper, teal photo mat) Arrowed Sentiments Brushes and Stamps No. 01 (wordart with arrows; I extracted an arrow to accent the journaling) Jingle Element Pack (candy cane) STUDIO DOUBLE-D Curated Studio Mix Scrapbooking Kit No. 18 (ribbon bow) CATHY ZIELSKE Six by Eights No. 01 Layered Template Set (photo template) LYNN GRIEVESON Andersen Cards, Tags and Printables (pocket "how it was" card, "december" tag, blank tag... Head on over and join in the fun! Kelly's gave me the nudge I need to give myself a good talking to! Thanks for the challenge Kelly! Lately I’ve been getting a little stressed about my level of fitness and more so, the extra pounds that are creeping back on. My clothes are feeling less comfortable and I’m craving so much sweet stuff. Constantly. I have the devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. I know my level of fitness is nowhere near where it was in February 2013 when I felt the best I’ve felt in years. And the figure showing on the scale is leaning more and more to the right of where it was way back then. So I need to listen up. And listen well. Enough of the excuses. I know the ones. Getting home from work at 6.15pm and considering it ‘too late’ to exercise. Thinking I’m too tired but then I still don‘t get into bed at a reasonable time. Thinking I’ve had a lousy day when most days aren’t that lousy, it’s just that I’d rather be doing other things. Thinking I’ll exercise tomorrow - and then I don’t. Thinking I just can’t be bothered. And when I make an excuse, I merely waste the time I would have spent exercising doing nothing particularly productive. I know if I’m exercising I feel a whole lot better. So I’m disappointed in myself. I’ve struggled to get back ‘in the zone’. But I will get back on track. I have to. I need to get back to the balance. To the exercise and healthy eating balance. Including drinking more water. And I mustn’t think the Christmas season is a reason not to exercise and eat healthily. It’s about moderation. And the fact that I feel so much better when I have this balance. I can do this. I will do this. STARTING TODAY. Hope you're motivated by the challenge. ;O) Dad loved that he had created such a large family for himself and he loved it when we all got together. If you suggested that he do something specific, he would often say, “I’ll have one of my people do it.” Then he’d grin and usually one of the grandkids would jump up and down with their hand in the air saying, “I’ll do it, Nonno!” I can hear my dad’s response very clearly in my mind these days... and in my heart. The holidays are always a bit stressful for me, and I know it’s my own fault most of the time. But,this year I might just follow his lead. I wonder how many of my men will jump up and down? Thanks for the challenge, Pam. We have a family here in Tucson who lost three of their four children, over about a 15 year period to Niemann-Pick Type C Disease. Annually, there was a benefit to raise money for research to find a cure for this devastating disease. Amy Grant performed frequently at this benefit, but one year, Vince Gill took her place. At the end of the night, he sang this song. I am grateful every day for the health of my children, and for the blessed life that I live. This song is a reminder of how important it is to be thankful for what you have and pay it forward. You can’t take it with you. Lyrics: You read the business page, see how you did today Life's just passed you by You live up on the hill, you've got a view that kills And never wonder why After you've counted everything you've saved Do you ever hit your knees and pray? You know there's gonna be a judgment day So what will you say? No matter what you make All that you can take Is what you give away What you give away There's people on the street, ain't got enough to eat And you just shake your head The measure of a man is one who lends a hand That's what my father said After you've counted everything you've saved Do you ever hit your knees and pray? You know there's gonna be a judgment day So what will you say? No matter what you make All that you can take Is what you give away You know it's not too late It's all for Heaven's sake What you give away Credits: Lynn Grieveson' Life in Pictures No. 02 Template Album Distressed lines and Word Art Brushes and Stamps Katie Pertiet Blendable Layers No. 07 Metsa Painted Accents Blendable Layers No. 06 Brierley Roughed Up Paper Pack Thanks for looking!

8 comments Fri, 24 Oct 2014 21:41:04 +0000 AAM: Anthem

by: rache77

Description}: I love U2 and their song "All that You Can't Leave Behind" speaks to me like no other..In fact I was humming the song while doing the page! :-) Credits: Almost Spring Kit Finley Kit Creswell Element Pack Autumnal Artistry Brushes and Stamps Cold Spring Brushes and Stamps Blendable Layers No. 4 and 5 Blendable Layered Template No. 3 Letterbox Essentilas No. 1 Thanks for taking a peek!

6 comments Thu, 23 Oct 2014 21:06:32 +0000 It's My Life

by: blkcow

Description}: This song by Bon Jovi, has got to be my favorite song of all anthem. I remember when Baz Luhrmann first released Everybody’s Free (to Wear Sunscreen) … which was known widely as “The Sunscreen Song” I played it over and over and over again. It resonated so much with me, such wise words. If you’re not familiar with it, You Tube or iTune it, and listen. It was originally an article written by journalist Mary Schmich. Earlier this week I was part of leading a prayer gathering where thousands of women gathered all across the world to pray and ask God to be mightily used to make a difference in our unique places. I am a GIANT introvert and am not a fan of talking in front of people, much less PRAYING in front of them, but nevertheless, felt called to be a part of leading this in our community. 28 women gathered from 10 different churches in our area and it was an awesome night. Definitely out of my comfort zone, but definitely worth it! The words on the chalkboard background is my prayer that I led that evening. TFL! Journaling reads: It didn’t used to be hard to race down rocky cliffs to the ocean, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to do adventurous things without fear and pain. Arthritis has taken its toll along with a broken bone and rickety knees and hips. My comfort zone now is to stand alone and watch others scramble over hills and rocks. But this one time, thinking that no one was around to watch my slow progress, I began the climb down. I made it. My little dogs made it. Maybe I can do it again. Hope you'll play along. :O) A friend works at a middle school an hour away and asked if I’d help out with a project she was doing. The kids were going to build a box city on the property of the school and stay there until midnight. This was an exercise that dealt with homelessness. Karen wanted me to give a presentation on the subject. Well, working with these people for so many years, I knew enough and could research any specifics that I needed for our area and figured I could do it . . . but, oh I really wanted to say, “I would love to, but . . . ” So, although I could have turned her down, she was my friend, so I said, “yes” and figured I'd deal with the nerves later. I had never spoken to a large group of people before and there was a reason for that . . . it was a large group of people! This was going to be worse . . . it was a large group of middle-schoolers! Ack. I wrote note card after note card and practiced until I had it practically memorized. Then I practiced out loud to the traffic as I drove the hour to the school. I was soooooo out of my comfort zone. When I got there, I got to know the kids by taking pictures of their progress with the city. They were loving it and loving that I was taking pictures . . . (middleschoolers, remember?) I had no idea, but this was exactly what needed to be done in order to have the whole speech thing work out. From the very beginning, the kids were very attentive, and I think it was because they felt they knew me. At the end they asked questions and then some of them actually came up and told me stories that related to my presentation. I was still shaking a bit, but by the time I was back in my car I felt nothing but pride. I did it. I never would have thought that I could. Something I had been afraid of all my life and I concoured it . . . with a little help from my friend. (Not saying I want to do it again any time soon . . . Ha!) I'm late to the game, but I found myself messing with the journaling on this one forever! There really is no way for me to describe it. I had no idea that I could love a man-made structure so much. That's not me. There's nothing sentimental about it, nothing that fits with my usual love of color or texture . . . I just LOVE these things. I want to take pictures of them any time I see them. One day I'm going to find a way to stand right up next to one and have my picture taken with it. Call me crazy . . . ;) Journaling: I find that I’m most impressed with things that are on a scale that is not the norm. The first time I visited the Lincoln memorial I was so impressed, but it was not for reasons that I expected. I was impressed with the sheer size of the thing. I couldn’t quit looking at it. On our first trip out west we stopped at the Badlands of SD. Once again, very impressive. Mount Rushmore was nice, but standing right in the heart of the Badlands, there is a different feeling. Like we are quite small in a big world. From then on it was my answer to the question, “What’s your favorite place to visit?” When I travel on the road these days, one of my most favorite sights is the large wind farms. I knew these farms existed, but had no idea the effect they would have on me when I actually saw one. They seem to go on for miles and the large farm itself looks so small tucked into the middle of these huge turbines. They are massive and I have to make myself keep my eyes on the road if I pass a truck hauling one of the huge blades. There is no way for me to describe my “excitement” when seeing one of these. It seems silly even to me, but I can’t help it if I find these massive pinwheels exhilerating. Rainbow Loom is my guilty pleasure. LOL! :) It all looks like my daughter's, but I have my own sets too. Journaling reads: I am addicted to Rainbow Loom. My daughter first tried it in summer camp last year. One of the girls brought one in and showed it off. So we got one for Victoria and some rubber bands and tried it out. I spent so much time on YouTube finding videos of how to do various bracelets. We had a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it. I’d pick out a color combination to go with my clothes and make a couple different styles of bracelets in those colors so I could wear them all together. We bought extra looms so we could make bracelets large enough for my wrist. I got a whole separate set of boxes for looms and rubber bands for me. I bought pony beads and sorted them by color into another storage box. We each have our own Rainbow Looms sets and we’re loving it. Hope you'll join us in this challenge.....I'd love to read something about you! Journaling reads: Not many people know this about me, but I am scared to death of taxi cab rides. Not so much the everyday cab ride in the US, but in a foreign country, I turn into a heaping bundle of nerves. I just can’t see the good sense of getting into a vehicle with a stranger, neither of us speaks the others language and I can’t figure out the money conversion. And then they LOCK the door. I travel with my sister and she knows this about me, so she is the take charge person, while I just pace and worry. She has gotten us through cab rides in Mexico, Greece and Egypt and we haven’t been killed, not even once. But the most memorable ride was in Acapulco from our hotel to the cruise ship. We arranged for a cab with the hotel concierge and he comes to pick us up. He has very few teeth, which makes the Dental Assistant in me wonder what’s going on.... but he has a rosary hanging from the rear view mirror. I elbow my sister and say, “This is a good sign, surely a cabbie that has a rosary won’t kill us.” She just rolls her eyes. So we are weaving in and out of traffic and I whisper to her.....I am going to take a photo of the rosary......she says, “Don’t do it, it might make him mad” I do it anyway, that’s the rebel in me. It all turned out ok and we made it to the cruise ship alive and met up with the rest of our siblings for a wonderful cruise through the Panama Canal. But, it was touch and go for awhile! We love the girls who own the place, we love the work that Cyndee does with refinishing furniture, we love the mix of inventory that they sell, but most of all we love the feel of the place. It’s so inviting and so relaxing and so happy. We usually start by getting our drinks and then walking around a bit looking to see what’s knew and what Cyndee’s worked on during the past week. After that we sit for awhile chatting, discussing and even venting about our week and catch up with the goings on in each other’s lives. Then we walk around a bit more and throw out ideas about this or that (as far as decorating) and then sit some more or chat with Cyndee and Julie. We love this place and we need this place. It's my answer to "What do you have too much of?" Thanks for the challenge, Janet. I have a passion for PJs. I don’t know what it is. It’s not like anyone else sees them really. I don’t wear them around the house. I put them on in my room and go to bed; then I am usually dressed in the morning before I leave the bedroom. I‘m going to say it’s a texture thing. I am attracted to texture in art, in fabrics, even with food (apple sauce is a definate no.) Pajamas have such a great feel to them. Unlike jeans and t-shirts that all feel alike, pjs come in “seasons.” Jersey, silky, cotton, flannel; I love them all. Brights, pastels, florals, stripes and polk-a-dots, even stripes with polk-a-dots. PJs dont’ have to be boring. I choose them because they are fun or sexy or a little out there. I guess I see them as an extention of my personality. I like change and I like to mix things up a bit. The only thing they all have in common is that they were on sale. The “necessary” part of the sentence is debatable I suppose! I have come to the conclusion that I have too much . . . or too many . . . or perhaps an excess of a few things which I use in my sewing room. (I truly do use these items.) This said, I thought that Janet’s AAM Challenge was perfect to get this off of my chest and confront the issue! Confront the issue on paper anyway! Journaling: I have much to much when it comes to my sewing stash, I’m afraid. I have boxes of fabric tucked away . . . out of sight . . . out of mind! I really try not to visit my favorite sewing stores for fear of coming home with new treasures. I do use all items from my collective supplies most every day when I crank up my sewing machine. I really need several different types of scissors, trims, threads, pins, needles, buttons, laces, interfacing, rulers, tapes, binding, sewing patterns in multiple sizes and styles, idea books and instructional books. I need my serger, my sewing machine, my smocking patterns and my pleater. I must have an iron and starch. I adore pincushions and need several for my pins & needles. I am not really sure that I need my collection of vintage pattern books, or vintage sewing patterns, but I sure get lots of pleasure from browsing through them from time to time. I use the old patterns for styles and translate them into modern sizing by way of the newer sewing patterns . . . so I do need them, don’t I? I know that might sound a bit bizarre, but on a global level, it would greatly enhance our environment, and on a personal level, it would greatly enhance my life. I would love nothing better than to get up and ride Fancy to work, but unfortunately a road without shoulders blocks my way. The cars won't slow down and they won't move over. If folks wanted to travel from one place to another in their vehicles they could do so at night. The rest of the time, life could slow down a bit and we could all be a little healthier. Battery operated golf carts would transport those folks who can't use human power to get them from one place to another. We would probably have to allow emergency vehicles to operate during daylight hours, but that's it! Folks would live closer to where they work and true communities would spring up with all of the wonderful attributes that comes with knowing your neighbors. Teachers would live in the same area as their students, as would all others, the doctors, the lawyers... Neighborhoods would consist of a mix of economic levels. The world could even out a bit, crime would drop. Drive by shootings would cease, seriously can you imagine a drive by shooting on a golf cart! Robberies would diminish, can you imagine a get-away golf cart, or bicycle? Yes, I secretly wish we could slow down our daily lives, breath more fresh air, and forbid gas powered and any other type of fuel based vehicles from our roadways during daylight hours! I've been so busy! But I am trying to get back into the swing of things and finish my "All about Me" book that I've been working on for two years. I have done the challenges and also added some pages of my own. Here is what the journaling says: Or more accurately, a herd of cows. It was December 14th 1978. I had borrowed Jeff’s truck to go and see my boyfriend Danny and I was just heading back out to his house. It was late, sometime after midnight. I was traveling along the long country road and a deer ran out in front of me. I slammed on the brakes, which caused the truck to fishtail on a patch of black ice. I kept trying to get control of the truck. It felt like I was in slow motion. First I spun to the right, and then to the left. The truck careened madly around the road for what seemed like hours before it finally flipped over an embankment. The truck rolled front over back several times landing 30 feet down facing the road. I was in shock (that is the only explanation I have for my actions following the accident). When I landed, I was slammed into the steering wheel knocking the breath out of me. It hurt! My first thought was that the truck was going to “blow up”, so I turned off the headlights. (See what I mean about stupid actions?) Now I was virtually hidden from any cars that may have travelled the road above. I sat for a minute in silence and then I noticed that I had landed in a field full of cattle. I decided I had to get away from the cows as I was afraid of them (See! Stupid thoughts. Because I am not now, nor have I ever been, afraid of cows!) So, I climbed out of the truck and up the embankment to the road above. I was in so much pain. My stomach, legs, head and arm all hurt. I walked over a mile to a house down the road. I knocked on their door and asked to use a phone to call my brother. As I waited for Jeff, they allowed me to lay on their couch. When Jeff arrived he took me into the clinic in town. When I arrived there, the nurse found that I had barely any blood pressure. There was no Doctor on duty, so she called one in. When the doctor arrived, he deemed that they could not wait for an ambulance to come from Spokane. So he put me in the back seat of his car and drove me himself!! He was driving about 90 miles an hours. Boy was I frightened! When we got to the hospital they did emergency exploratory surgery to see where I was bleeding internally. Well, when I hit the steering wheel, I ruptured my spleen. They said it was a miracle that I had lived so long with a ruptured spleen, especially since I had walked a mile, waited on my brother, gone to the clinic and finally been driven from Cheney to Spokane. So... you see, if not for the cows, I would have stayed in the truck and died. credit: mask by Katie Pertiet color inspiration paper 12311 by Katie other: brown stitching by Anna Aspnes

21 comments Thu, 01 May 2014 22:32:59 +0000 AAM_Glad I Did It

by: mugsbigsis

Description}: Janet has a wonderful All About Me prompt on the blog. I went with a topic that my husband and I were just discussing the other day. When I walked into the house for the first time I knew it was the one. There was lots of room in this house. The boys would have their own rooms and there was a huge basement. I had never lived in a house where there were stairs, much less a basement and I loved it. (Plus, everything was oak and I loved the warm feel of it all). Not long after we moved in I learned something about myself; I need windows and open spaces. I spent very little time down stairs and I know it’s because it is half underground with small windows. I tried to have a sewing room upstairs after Mark switched bedrooms and found that I never wanted to go up there and sew and would end up bring my machine down to the kitchen table. So, we decided to add a little more space. We added only a little more than the length of a couch out into the backyard from the kitchen doors and the small room that shared a wall with the kitchen. This opened the whole place right up. My main goal was light so the whole south side is windows. This was going to be my Christmas tree window (there was not a single large window for a tree anywhere else in the house). I also added a gas fireplace as I hated the log burning stove downstairs. I now spend all my time in the addition. I can sit and stitch while I watch tv online. I can sit in front of the fireplace and look at the Christmas tree. I can read my kindle or listen to audio books. I even do yoga in this room (once the coffee table is out of the way). This is where I do my bird watching. This is where I use to watch for Mark to come and go from school. I watch kids build snowmen and play soccer out my windows and I see some wonderful sunsets silohetting a favorite tree that changes with the seasons. The addition makes my house perfect. I'm so glad I did it.
