I scraped together enough money for a tree, brought it back to my apartment on a city bus, bought plain ornaments and decorated them with glitter. But I did also manage to buy 4 beautiful, glittery, expensive gold ornaments that I have salvaged through 45 years of moves and pets and families. I only have 2 of the 4 left and they are pretty scrungy. But here they are in all their once golden glory. My parents were "Holiday Central". A few years after getting married, I asked to have Christmas Eve at my house, which was much bigger and could hold everyone more comfortably. Considering how difficult I now know this must have been, my mother let go gracefully...or as gracefully as possible. This year we will not celebrate on Christmas Eve but on Dec 21 so that the kids can all go to their in-laws houses for the holidays. This year, it is my turn to be graceful...or, like my mother, as graceful as possible. I am telling a bit of a story for the Christmas of 1972 when our three boys were small. The page is also a new page for my Family Christmas Card book, which I began last year. This year when we send out our Christmas cards it will the 49th card we have sent since our wedding just before the Christmas of 1966. For years, I have been meaning to make a book for each of our children containing each of our cards. I’m starting this book fully aware that I’ve several other Christmas book yet unfinished . . . but, plugging along at each of them when the mood strikes me! This 1972 card was the 7th one we sent to friends and family . . . this year we were stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. I am probably going to make this book where it can have pages added as the years roll on and Christmas cards are added one by one. Right now my plans are to do one book for the first 25 years and another for the second 25. My immediate goal is to have the first book done by next Christmas as a gift to each of our four children. Journaling: The Christmas of 1972, we were stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and living in a house which Ernie & I were renovating in the Cottonade subdivision in Fayetteville. We bought the old house there in the spring of ‘72 and moved in with Kevin was 2 days old! This Christmas was the first of three Christmas’s there. We didn’t go to Cookeville this year for Christmas day, but stayed in our new house. Daddy rode the Greyhound bus down and spend the holidays with us . . . I guess that he road the bus back to Tennessee later on too . . . I just can’t remember! I do remember that the weather was beautiful on Christmas day that year . . . I had written down in a little notebook that it was 60-degrees and that Michael and Mark went outside to play with some of their new Tonka trucks in the big sand pile which Ernie was using to mix concrete . . . few days earlier it was 75-degrees. I made Michael’s & Mark’s little red striped pajamas and Kevin wore the little striped nightshirt, which I had made for Michael for his second Christmas. Santa Claus brought the boys a bouncy horse to ride, red rubber boots, books, Playschool barn and animals, Fisher Price record player, a little walking robot. Aunt Lucille gave baby Kevin a sweet little stuffed dog which she got at Christmas Village in Nashville when she and I went down when we were home for Thanksgiving. Aunt Velma made cozy white terry cloth bathrobes. Mother and Daddy gave them the barn & record player. Mark got a burn on his face that Christmas from Pa Pa Pat’s cigarette . . . it wasn’t bad, but Daddy felt just awful over it all. I felt sorry for Daddy . . . it hurt him much longer than it did little Mark. The photo, which I used on our card this year, was made at the K-Mart in Cookeville after Thanksgiving. When my son (who was 9 at the time) had to pick someone to research and portray for a school project, he chose his grandfather. This is that story. He was a larger than life guy and he passed away almost 4 years ago. We miss him terribly! Journaling: Joe Davis, was a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient. He fought with the 101st Airborne Division in the Battle of the Bulge. He didn’t talk much about it. A few years ago, when Wes was in 3rd grade, the kids had a project called Bio-Bash. The students had to choose someone they admired and wanted to know more about. They had to research that person, write a report, and do a presentation dressed as that individual. The students chose such people as Ben Franklin, Mia Hamm, Will Rogers, to name a few. Wes chose his Grandpa Joe. We drove to San Diego for the weekend and Wes interviewed Joe about his life. The two of them talked at length & Joe opened up to Wes and told him about his experience in Europe, at least what he could tell a nine year old. Joe also told him how he came to be awarded the Purple Heart. He even pulled out the medal and we all got to look at it, touch it and take photos of it. It was very touching to watch the two of them. Unfortunately, his grandpa couldn’t be there the day he gave his presentation but Wes was so proud to represent his grandpa and to be a decorated war hero for a little while. I know Grandpa Joe would have been very proud! In addition to the freebie provided by Katie Pertiet (thank you, Katie) I used the following items. All are by Katie Pertiet. All research and journaling was done by my son, Tom. He spent many hours researching and putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Tom was honored to tell his Grandfathers story and I am honored to document it. Page inspiration comes from Carollee's Just Call Me Nanna Journaling reads: George Robert Wilson started his military career at Fort Riley, Kansas as a Cavalry riding instructor. He taught many young recruits how to ride and bond with the horses they would ride into battle. As the Axis powers came to full strength and America was pulled into the conflict, it was correctly determined that the use of mounted soldiers was not going to be the route to victory in a fully mechanized war. The cavalry was disbanded and the cavalry officers, and enlisted were reassigned. George then entered into the airborne for paratrooper training for a brief period of time. As it goes in the military, a person can be re-assigned several times and he was eventually transferred to what we believe was the 637th Tank Destroyer Battalion and entered the Pacific campaign against the Empire of Japan. The 637th battalion saw active duty in the Luzon campaign the Philippine's. The 637th received Distinguished Unit Citation from General Eisenhower at the end of the war due to their performance in the intense fighting they participated in as the last armed pockets of fanatical Japanese soldiers fought to the death in an attempt to hold Luzon. Any time one of his children or Grandchildren asked him about his experiences, he would simply say....”I went to the War, and then I came home.” There was usually little in between. When you sit back and evaluate the intensity of the battles in that area during the very last year of the war, some of the numbers are staggering. The Allied forces consisted of nearly 1 million men compared to a Japanese force of 287,000. Our soldiers outnumbered the Japanese by a ratio of almost 4 to 1. Still, the Japanese were able to hold off the US forces for nearly a year, and when the fighting came to an end, over 200,000 Japanese soldiers had been killed in comparison to nearly 9,000 Allied. The death and destruction that these young men must have been exposed to has rarely been seen on that scale throughout history. One can hardly blame any one of them for not wanting to glorify it, let alone describe what they went through, but I feel it’s very important that we do not forget the courage of both those who gave their lives, and those who gained scars less visible. Their sacrifice provides generations of Americans, both living and yet to be born with the opportunities we have in the world today. This is a story about Polish national memory, about incredible courage and dedication, about a patriotism unimaginable now a today. When I was a girl guide I used to imagined myself fighting during the uprising (thousands of Polish scouts and girl guides were fighting and died in the uprising), then, when I became a mother I started to think about all “uprising mothers” dying of fear for their children during these horrible days. Now, when my parents are senile and infirm I begin to understand tragedy of all totally defenseless civilians who lived in the basement without food or water. I know that from a historical and political perspective Warsaw Uprising was a catastrophe and absolutely unnecessary heroism but from perspective of all those young soldiers it was pure, not a calculated patriotism. I started to get interested in the uprise when I became a scout. Now I know a lot more about it and a lot more I understand but still it is shocking for me. This year we celebrate the seventieth anniversary of Warsaw Uprising. ( „celebrate“ is not a good word, it associate with joy and happiness, but Warsaw Uprisng didn’t have happy end.) There was lot of events to commemorate the uprising. Today's young people are not interested in history and they do not understand heroic patriotism of those days , so when Ula took a part of a very special Scout Event in Warsaw – I was so proud of her. Journalling: CONGRATULATIONS . STOP . TWINS . STOP . MOTHER AND BABIES WELL . STOP . Grandpa was stationed in the Pacific during WWII spending many years in New Guinea with the Australian Army. It’s a hard life for a newly married man to be overseas away from his beloved wife, especially when she was having his baby. Story has it that he received a telegram one fateful day in October congratulating him on becoming a father of twins! This was not the case at all, but he didn’t know that at the time. Mum has been told all these years that grandpa went AWOL when the telegram arrived, trying every way possible to get back to Australia to see his babies. But he never made it out of New Guinea. In fact mum was a little girl around the age in these photos before she met her father for the first time. She tells me she was quite frightened of this strange man in the khaki uniform because she didn’t know him. How hard it must have been for these young men to come home from war only to step into a civilian life so foreign, assuming the role of father when they didn’t even get to know their babies. Grandpa certainly made up for it over the years that followed as Glenda (my mum) was very much loved and the only child that Harry and Ivy had.

18 comments Tue, 04 Nov 2014 07:31:52 +0000 Courage, Service, Sacrifice

by: sterkeurs

Description}: Thanks for the opportunity to document this. Lest we forget Katie Pertiet: Story Challenge freebie Poppy Fields Element Pack MBS: Just Linens Paper Pack No. 64 The story: My grandmother passed away last year and I've just recently gone through a couple boxes of her things. Among lots of costume jewelry, old photos and some mementos from trips, I also came across a box with some medals from WW2. I’m not exactly sure who they belong to and I don’t have anyone to ask. My great-uncle, her brother, was in the war and so it is very possible that these belonged to him. It remains a bit of a mystery. Unfortunately, I also have very little knowledge about my great-uncle. I know that he was a medic in the Second World War and that when he returned after the war ended, he never really recovered. The rest of his life he lived in Colonel Belcher Veterans Hospital. He never talked about his experiences overseas. I can only imagine that he witnessed horrible and tragic things that were so violent that it was impossible for him to return to a normal life afterwards. Unfortunately, his experiences there are forever lost as he passed away many years ago. I will keep the medals. They remind me of the stories that I never heard but can only imagine, and they symbolize someone who went away to war and only partially returned. This year, like I have for many years, I will attend the Remembrance Day ceremonies downtown, and remember him and all those who served their country in battle and sacrificed so much.
