DD is truly a joy in my life and I'm so grateful to Katie and Randy to be a part of it all. JOURNALING Can these two words truly express all the gratitude and happiness that comes from being a part of the Designer Digitals community? Six years ago, I would not have imagined that a website and the extraordinary people involved would become such a big part of my life. Katie and Randy, I’m forever grateful for DD... for you for asking me to be a part of the amazing CT, for the wonderful, wonderful products from all the talented designers and, mostly, for the very real and true friends I’ve found. So , yeah... I guess those two little words really can say it all... thank you. I am so happy to be a part of not only the Creative Team, but this community as a whole. It is a blessing. Journaling: I was asked to join the Creative Team at the beginning of the year, and it took my love for this community to whole new level. Not only did I make deeper friendships, I learned so many new techniques. My absolute favorite pages to create are the pages that have blending, brushwork , multiple filters and layering of masks. I would say that it all started with Jana’s classes, and then Katie’s tutorials on painting. And of course, none of my pages would be possible without the designers wonderful products. It is a blessing to be a part of this wonderful community and I am looking forward to the years ahead. PARTY ON - 11AM Eastern TODAY Don't think I will get there :( Very late at night here in little old Perth - but had a blast making this page to celebrate the occasion! Journaling - I am thankful for DD. I am thankful for the amazing digital product. I am thankful for the everyday inspiration. I am thankful for the way someone is always there to answer a question about Elements or Photography or life in general! But this little photo reminds me of the reason I am most thankful for DD. This photo is of a small person whom I would never have met, if it were not for this place. And while she almost certainly does not remember me, she and her lovely mum were a part of one of the lovliest days I have spent on this earth. This little girl, on the other side of the world, is a symbol to me of the good things that the web has made possible. We may speak jokingly at times of our “online friends”, but this photo reminds me that they are very real people, and that we are priviliged to know them and to learn about their lives through their lovely pages. To him they were all integral parts of a one-man cultural movement called Merz, which he invented, deriving the name from Kommerz, German for commerce." I chose the theme of tragedy for two reasons: 1) I began this piece with a scanned section of a mixed media collage on canvas I did last year with the same theme. 2) Both Schwitters and Marilyn Monroe struggled with an unfulfilled need for belonging. But I thought it was SUCH a story. Companion to Soul Mates Journaling: The courtship evolves in the usual slow, predictable, rhythmic pattern. He makes the formal calls to her home; takes tea under the scrutiny of her grandmother and aunts. They converse about music, literature, post war Germany. The two stroll through the family garden while watchful eyes stand barely concealed behind lace curtains. With the flick of an eye and a barely perceptible movement of her head the grandmother indicates her approval. Precious moments alone are stolen in the rarified atmosphere of the campus. Back, forth, over, under – the basic pattern emerges. In 1921, Bruce has his B.S. in chemical engineering and is on faculty at the University of Texas as a chemistry tutor. Elinor is a senior, continuing her studies in biology and botany. They know that they will marry….some day. But a “dream come true” introduces a discordant thread into the pattern. Bruce is accepted into the Ph.D program at Yale University. His family disapproves (although the exact reason has been lost to time). It is not a family that devalues education, but perhaps the degree choice or the university is the issue. What is clear is that they offer no financial support. Her family is ecstatic but the couple cannot live on their enthusiasm. She is still in school. He cannot support a wife. She cannot ask him not to go. Back, forth, over under -how to weave these new threads into the design? One thousand five hundred seventy eight miles: How does a couple maintain a relationship over that distance for 3 years? There is no internet; no social networking; no email. Telephones are in use but by no means did every household have one. Back, forth, over, under – the weaving now over a considerable distance, threads stretched thin, but a new design emerges. They practice a communication skill that is almost forgotten in this day and time. They write letters….and cards….and notes on the back of a photograph. For Bruce takes pictures. He photographs his dorm, the faculty, the campus buildings and the train yards. He loans his camera to a friend, who takes his picture in front of the chemistry building. He grows a mustache because he thinks it makes him look distinguished. He shaves it off when she writes that it looks as if he is wearing a caterpillar on his lip. Back, forth, over under - at least once a week the missives cross each other in the mail. Back, forth, over, under. She pursues her Master’s at UT, and tutors students in German to save for their future home. She makes at least two trips to the “East” to visit and he comes home for holidays when he can. The design is different, but it is strong, and clear and woven to endure. And then it is 1924. Both have graduated. Now their joy and their challenge is to learn to live together. I chose from the Passion Prompts provided at;emc=learninga2 Journaling: If, as legend has it, soul mates are bound by an invisible thread, then by the time Elinor Rogers and Bruce Houston discovered each other, their lives had already been woven into a dense tapestry. They meet at the University of Texas in 1919. Eyes lock across an outdoor water fountain. By nature he is an introvert but he is stricken by an out-of-character impulse to say hello. She is outgoing and sociable but suddenly shy. Will he think me forward? Back, forth, over, under. The usual pleasantries are exchanged. Where are you from? San Antonio says he; Austin, not far from the campus, says she. What are you studying? Chemical Engineering says he; biology and botany says she. (Biology? Botany? Ah, intriguing, a woman who is interested in science. Brains and beauty.) Oh my, look at the time! Classes start soon and they must go their separate ways, but not before arranging to meet again. Back, forth, over, under. Commonalities are explored - love of reading, of learning, of classical music, of being outdoors. Her playful streak brings out a side of him hidden since childhood, and shown to very few people. His serious nature encourages her to study (although she is already a good student). He loves her hair; she loves his eyes. Both like structure and routine. Back, forth, over, under. Points of tension arise. He is from a wealthy, influential family and is expected to marry well. She fears his family finds her lacking. Her family is comfortable but far from wealthy. Social class differences are a formidable obstacle, but he has no desire to “hobnob with the nabobs.” I love you not your money or position, says he. He walks away from the family fortunes, and while there are things he will regret in his life, choosing to be with her is never one of them. Back, forth, over, under. Back, forth, over, under. Warp and weft: the strong commonalities the warp; the differences and tensions the weft, filling in the pattern of two lives. Intricate, complicated, multi-dimensional, year after year. Together they weave a tapestry of love. The very thought of you brings to mind dozens of lively memories. As I recall our days together, I feel the rush of youth. Remember the big, double hill in front of our house? I bet we walked up, and rode down, that hill at least a thousand times during my childhood. If the snow was just right, and I got a good running start, we would sail down both hills without hesitation--it almost felt like flying! Sometimes my sister wanted to ride too. She sat in front because my legs were longer and my boots could reach to steer . Once, all of the neighbors--Moms, Dads, and kids-- went sledding behind the church--that hill was wide enough for racing. You also carried my own children down snow-covered hills until we bought plastic sleds--for the record, I prefer your good, old-fashioned style. Just wanted to say thanks for all the swell times. Fondly, The little girl with the red boots All DD Supplies Katie Pertiet Naturally Krafty No. 08 Paper Pack Photo Journal Clusters 1 Downhill Classics Brushes and Stamps Vintage Flashcards: Winter Jesse Edwards Rosehill Paper Pack Anna Aspnes SnowSpray No. 01 BrushSet Font / Traveling Typewriter

26 comments Sat, 19 Feb 2011 18:05:45 +0000 Chocolate Sprinkles

by: ValerieP

Description}: PageKraft Write True No26 I ended up using the same prompt-because none of the others really fit! I just HAD to lift it. Thank you for the inspiration, dear. My daughters took me to NYC last weekend to celebrate my 3 score birthday and it was a LOVELY weekend. No one knows how to touch a mother's heart like a daughter. We went to a Broadway play, dined, shopped and took tours of the city--all things the guys struggle to endure. This prompt is the perfect way to say thank you.
