Growing up in America, the 4th of July was just a day for fireworks and barbeques. But raising kids outside of America grows in me the urge to celebrate America more than ever. Description}: This is the second of two pages inspired by this challenge. The first was too personal and would mean nothing to anyone else with the journalling obscured. This page was inspired by Ali's Inspiration #5 in yesterday's chat. I want to leave a record of why I suddenly disappeared from my family's history. Two of my siblings are no longer speaking to me. That said, I will not be sharing my journalling on this page either, because I recognize that there are two sides to every story and that the Internet is forever. Suffice it to say that I have bought out my siblings and the family cottage now belongs to me. He was diagnosed with a rare soft tissue cancer called Leiomyosarcoma. After that we found out that it was stage 4 and it was in his stomache, lungs, liver and probably countless other places. I am so thankful for like minds. Every step of the way Dad�s decisions echoed what I would have done (or at least I think I would have done being that I was not exactly in his shoes.) In any case, my siblings and I were very supportive of his decision not to have treatment. He wasn�t feeling any worse than the normal aches and pains that he had had for the past few years and he didn�t see any reason to feel miserable for the last part of his life, leave huge bills to be paid and essentially drag out the inevitable. In fact he said it was simple, he was tired. Dad had never been afraid to die. He told me this on more than one occassion when I was growing up. He also told me that if a UFO landed in our back field that he would be the first one to volunteer to go with them. (His work with the computer system on the Lunar Module may have had something to do with this). He was serious and I remember thinking, �NO! You can�t leave us and go with aliens! We�d never see you again!� But, then when I was older I thought there would surely be a time in my life that one could buy a ride on one of these (like going to the moon or something) and I figured I�d just buy him a ticket. Now, it�s funny, but this is my one regret for him . . . that he never got to go up in that spaceship. (No, Dad, not that you never stood on the burning deck of a whaling ship or figured out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop; but, that you never got to go with them). Dad calculated that he had been around the world seven times, had seen almost every country in the developed world, and he had gone to some countries before Americans were even allowed in without special permission. He was his own boss for over 30 years, was married for 52 years, had 6 children and 17 grandchildren. He served in the air force, built a house with his own hands, saw thriteen presidents take office, helped put a man on the moon, lived 20 plus years after a major heart attack, and made and sent his own Jeramiah Johnson Jerky to soldiers overseas for over two decades. Dad left us to continue his adventures on Thanksgiving morning. He really did live a full life and I think he�d say it was a great life, too. I will miss him for the rest of my life and there is an ache in my heart that I know will never really go away, but I know that I will always smile when I think of him - the man that I called, Dad.

Dirty Hands Day - Story Challenge

Description}: A relatively quiet Thursday. There were a few places I was scheduled to go today but my 1pm meeting was cancelled. Yea! A lot got done on the computer in the morning because I knew that I wouldn't have to stop mid day and leave the house. That's a nice feeling when I feel I want to get some things done without a deadline over me. I am not one of those people who likes deadlines though when I was working, I could certainly work with them. But I mean I would start a project as soon as I got it and not wait til the 11th hour. I could prioritize what needed more attention and not just work on something because I just got the assignment. I do not like the adrenaline rush of waiting til the last minute on things. At all! My heart thanks me for that aversion. So lunch was over, the sun was shining, and it wasn't hot. A perfect time to get out in the yard and pot up/plant a batch of the annuals I bought last weekend. We've had so much wind lately that I worried they'd dry out...before I got in the mood. My interest in gardening has waned as I've aged so this wasn't a project I was jonesing to do. However, we've had a goodly amount of rain since I bought those plants and they were in perfect shape to plant But that meeting I was going to that got cancelled? Well, it was quite near a K-Mart and I'd planned to buy a couple pairs of cheap gardening gloves. Gloves just good enough to keep my nails fairly clean. I used to always drag my nails over a bar of soap before gardening but bars of soap are rare in our house. (I need to keep one of those mini hotel soap bars downstairs for just this kind of occasion.) So out I went, without gloves as my true gardening gloves are too thick for transplanting those petunias with their flimsy roots. Two scrubs later, my nails are getting back to normal and my hands are getting quite dried out. That 2nd meeting? Fortunately, not so important so I'm taking a bye tonight. Gardeners need more than Happy Hour food and truthfully, I really don't ever need Happy Hour food, nor do I often like Happy Hour food. Tonight will be healthy and I'll be happy. Just a couple more nail scrubs and I'll be clean again. Man's Best friend-photo story

Description}: At first glance this may appear to be about my dad, who as obvious in this shot, was about 3 days away from his passing. But this is really about the dog. Tofu was a healer. She knew when people were sick & wouldn't leave their side if they were. She had a 6th sense of people's emotional & physical health. My dad had his own dog who he loved more than us. :) (We all wanted to come back in our next life as my dad's dog.) But it was Tofu who made him feel better in his final days. It was Tofu who laid back with him in his chair & snored. Tofu stayed with my dad during his final 2 months of life, after which she came home to her own house, her own bed (mine), & me.

Description}: In 2008 � I went and spent a week with my brother and his wife Stephanie � when the sale started today � I added to my stash and when I saw Carols �story� challenge � I thought this could do double duty�. I�m taking Jana�s designing doubles class and it starts next week�. Carol � Please only count one page for the challenge .....I really wanted you to see both! Friday � Mickey and I hit the park running. My favorite ride by far was the dueling dragons. The coaster goes really fast and turns you around until you face the other coaster in mid air. There was a short cut passage to ride it again and again and we did! Mickey and I arrived at the park as it opened. It was fun to have a few hours �alone� with my little brother. Description}: Going through some personal effects of my dad's that were sent to me after he passed away, gave me some insight into what he carried with him through the years and the things that mattered most. The all important social security card, an insurance card, an old ticket stub, drivers license and the like all pressed between the folds of his well worn wallet. But what impressed me most and touched me deeply was this vintage picture of a beautiful young lady who was yet to be his bride. Description}: My take on the "Playing with Paper" Challenge. :) Journaling reads: It all started because Dad had seen an article in the newspaper saying the Wings of Freedom was going to be at the Temple Airport. He was so excited about the B-24 that would be there and he wanted to take Cade. He called to inquire about reservations for flights, and found out that the planes don�t fly on the days they are moving to a new location. They were headed to Austin for the weekend, so we made plans to go there instead, and we made it a family trip. The B-24 was just too expensive for us all to fly on, so we opted to fly on the 1965 Huey instead. What a cool opportunity to get to fly in a helicopter...much less one from 1965, with the doors off! Lydia got to ride in the jump seat with the headset on and she could hear the pilot and tower communicating. We had so much fun! and Mom, Cade, and Lydia got to do something on their bucket lists!
