I'm kind of sad this is the last challenge. I have REALLY enjoyed them. The last six years have gone by in the a blink of an eye. You have transformed into a beautiful little girl who we adore and we are SO proud of you. As the oldest child, you have certainly taught me a lot about what truly matters in life. I often wonder what you are learning from us. As we celebrate your sixth birhtday, here are six things that I SOO hope we have taught you... 1. God loves you and will always be with you. 2. We love you dearly and will always be here for you. 3. Be Positive. Life isn't always easy but you determine your outlook on life and each situation you encounter. 4. Stay true to your faith, your family and yourself. 5. Laugh and have fun with life. Each day is a gift. 6. Believe in yourself and work hard. You can do anything you set your mind to. 'Tis the season for making memories and not enough time to scrap them! :) Seriously, I'm still going to be posting Christmas layouts in February! This particular layout isn't even a holiday themed one (she says, stating the obvious!), just an idea I had rattling around in my head that became more clear after I saw the poster for the Simply Inspired No. 23 Contest. I quite liked the doily in that poster, as well as the sewing theme, so I started there... My grams used to keep sewing journals. More like sewing scrapbooks, I suppose. They contained things like snips of fabric, pictures of clothing, and samples of stitches--she'd sew the stitch onto a piece of fabric and then tape the fabric into her journal. They also contained samples of techniques, like how to sew a button hole or how to make a dart. For example, on the right page of the bottom journal, the text reads, "The wrong way to make a dart" and "The right way," with these captions being under examples of the wrong way and the right way (again, stating the obvious! :) ). To make this layout, I scanned in some pages from Grammy's journals and copied them onto Katie's Vintage Journals No. 03. Then, because I am who I am--a person who was clearly frightened by empty space as a small child--I added lots more things to the page. :) Everything is DD except for those things scanned in by me. I couldn't find any sewing needles on the DD site, so I attempted to make some of my own, by starting with a stick pin that had a small tag on it from the Letter Box Seamstress kit, then erasing the tag and using the clone stamp function to put back the part of the stick pin that got erased in that process. After all that I think they still just look like stick pins and not needles, but oh well...Oh yea, I used Katie's fabric swatch brushes on fabric samples in my gram's journals, so if you see any "paper" you don't recognize, that's why. With the exception of one bit of journaling that I added ("Grammy Sheffield's Sewing Journals 1950"), the rest of the handwriting on this layout is my gram's. Now, I'm off to check out 4-5 days of layouts in the gallery. This may take a while... (Wait--did I just hear someone say, "Well, that explains a lot!"?) As part of the job, we are called upon to present our research to the other members of the group, and often these presentations involve PowerPoint slides. I was sitting in such a meeting today, looking at someone's slides and thinking how a few good scrapbooking touches--starting with a catchy title--would really perk up the presentation. :) My next thought was that I am spending waaaay too much time thinking about scrapbooking, but my next thought was about how I would actually go about scrapping my own research for a PowerPoint slide! (Seriously, I think I need an intervention...) The conflation of my work with scrapbooking is not such a stretch (really!)--in my field, when we talk of writing a paper about our work we say we are telling a story. Scrapbook layouts tell stories; this layout tells the story of my current research project, complete with actual data and graphs from my own notebooks. The bullet points often used in PowerPoint slides reminded me of the Simply Inspired No. 22 challenge, so after Cassie's Random Inspiration chat tonight, I put this together. I chose a stark white background so as to mimic a "real" slide, and the red swirlies are supposed to be the laser pointer people use to highlight portions of their slides. (If you've seen such a presentation, you know that some people get a little carried away with the laser pointer!) All of the doo-dads on the layout that aren't DD are mine--my glasses, pen and blender, my graphs and such from my own research notebooks. The "Famous Science Journal" is a scan of a real science journal which I then tinkered with. I suspect that my hubris for the slide title and the last two bullet points are going to get me smacked down hard by the fates. Oh, and no, I don't think I'll be presenting this at my next group meeting... The simply inspired challenge this time around is certainly a "challenge" but I had fun throwing as much "stuff" on here as possible. Thanks Deena for the wild inspiration piece! Journaling: You LOVE to hang out in Fritz’s garage. It certainly doesn’t hurt that he always has a project going on and he always includes you. Hands down you know more about cars than I do. Fritz owns our local Goodyear and you regularly walk through a parking lot and point out who has Goodyear tires! On this particular day, you went to dance class and upon returning home, you immediately headed to Fritz’s garage to work on his lawn mower. You came back later screaming because he explained that you had put the finishing touches on it and fixed it yourself. It was precious to see you so excited! And then you yelled “and you know what, our next project is fixing the HARLEY”. My sweet baby girl! You were also sporting a Goodyear tattoo to go along with your tutu! I couldn’t help but think that you were the 2008 version of Sandra Dee! I wonder if her mom was melting when she showed up in black leather. The colors and the paint in the poster gave me so many ideas. "So what's with the lizard?" When we went to Costa Rica, one of the iguanas near our beach hotel would come out every morning and sit on the stump, sunning herself. The staff called her "Lady" and I was captivated by how seemingly proud and regal she looked sitting there - as if to say, "here I am, admire me." And we did - proving that poise and attitude count for much more when it comes to being beautiful than does a pretty face. So with my apologies to Maya Angelou, I've excerpted and modified her wonderful poem, "Phenomenal Woman" for this page. As the poem says: you don't have to be a supermodel to be a phenomenal woman (or a phenomenal lizard)!
