Head on over to the blog for more details! My spin on the challenge is about the thoughts that go through my head when I know I'm procrastinating on something! Procrastination Captured. Defer action. Be dilatory (tending to or designed to delay). Punctuated by all the stops. I should but I don't feel like it. I'll leave it for now. But I know I should. I need to but... Ugh. Let me wait till I really feel like it. When there's not something else I'd rather be doing. HA! Just when will that by? Tomorrow? The next day? Next week? Later today? Trouble is, when it's left it just gets bigger... and bigger... and bigger. And it's 10 times hard to tackle. And it hangs over me constantly. So finally... I just jump in and do it. And then I'm like... HEY! Why was I putting it off so much? I've no idea but it feels so good to have got it done and dusted. Out of the way. Boxed off. Moral of the story? JUST DO IT. Till next time... and then there's always, always, always something else I'd rather be doing. It has become a tradition that started quite by accident 7 years ago when Charlie (the oldest) was only 3. Each year I take one of the boys alone to a concert, a play or special event. It is just the 2 of us for the evening...with dinner first & dessert afterwards. It is quality time for each of them with their "Grandy" and they look forward to it as much as I do. (Their friends all ask if I can do it with them too.) One year, Charlie & I were on our way to "The City" (Chicago) to see "The Blue Man Group. Charlie was 8 & sitting in his carseat behind me. We had only been on the road for 5 or 6 minutes & had not even stopped yet for dinner. We were chatting the way we always do when we're together. All of a sudden he burst out with, "Grandy, I'm already having a really good time!" My heart melted on the spot. PEAC stands for Parrot Education and Adoption Center & is a great organization based in San Diego. PEAC Here is the journaling that is on the page: July 3, 2009 You came to join our family just two days after your 21st birthday. The timing worked out like it was meant to be - I was ready to consider having another cockatoo in the family about the time you joined PEAC. You are so similar in some ways to Kyrie, a look in the eyes, a tilt of the head, the love of ‘Grandma’s’ laugh, yet, in so many other ways you are entirely yourself. There are so many questions we’d like to ask you! What was your life like before you came to live with your foster mom? Why are you so furious with your toys sometimes? Why are you so terrified of remotes? cell phones? phones in general? You know, most parrots love those things, right? Great buttons to pick off! Why do you pluck your feathers - just on your right shoulder? (Kyr plucked her leg feathers & we never really knew why) What remedies did your parents try to get you to stop? Why do your 2 outer tail feathers hang out a little further than normal? Why are you so brave when meeting new people? Step onto a strangers’ hand with no hesitation! So trusting! You will even let strangers swing you upside down! Why do you find all men so interesting? & they’re immediately the light of any room for you! Why are you so protective of your seed dishes? If my fingers tarry a little too long, you‘re liable to give me a nip! And speaking of nipping, why do you think it’s okay to give a good hard pinch when you don’t get your own way?? What makes you think it’s a good idea to scream when we’re in the room? Did that gain you attention before? We have so many more questions (more every day!) & I suppose most will never be answered… The elements used in the page are: Journaling Challenge 19 Jul 2009 (thanks Anna!) When it came time to become a citizen of his new country, that he so loved, he used his new name, Tom Jackson. And I thought it could be fun thing to scrap about. The ballerina and the cleaninglady is googled and adapted. This is a little crazy, but I was inspired by a commercial I saw on tv. *Now being five years old and my head said that being a ballerina or a cleaning lady would be the most brilliant occupation for me. So that is what I told people when they asked me what I wanted to become when I grow older. I grew older. About ten years later I took Miss Seguelquist’s Biology class and we had to dissect frogs, fetal pigs and a dead snake who had had a mouse for dinner. And I changed my mind. I decided that to study medicine and become a doctor would be a better idea. I liked to dissect. I liked to memorize all kinds of useless names of bodyparts. And that is why I still dissect dead stuff. I am even a part-time cleaning lady. But ballerina? Well, let us just say that we put that dream to rest. But I do dance. So I've done a few lovey dovey pages in his absence. I was also thinking about San Antonio (see you ladies in August!) and how this will be our second trip there since we've been together and we'll be celebrating our first wedding anniversay (I hate that we've "lost" the three years that we dated). My mom told me that if you can survive your first road trip intact then it's a very good sign! We had a very good first trip!! : ) This picture was taken on our first ever road trip. We were going to San Antonio to celebrate our first Valentine's Day. We didn't have a lot of options for hotels because we had to bring my dog, Boo Radley, and it is safe to say that he made the weekend interesting. He hates car rides so he barked the entire way and then when we got home he ate the chocolate that Ditz brought home for his mom. That dog and his stinking iron stomach. This is the trip where we discovered our mutual love of back roads and a shared desire to take thousands of photos of our surroundings. This is also when I first learned how much he hates having his picture taken and hates taking other people's photos. I do believe that there were tears (mine). Since this photo was taken we've been to California, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Virginia and driven most of the great state of Texas. I love that it takes us twelve hours to get from Austin to Dallas, I love that time we got lost on Fort Hood and couldn't figure out how we got there or how to get out, I love all the small towns we've seen, I love the great and not-so-great places we've eaten, I love all of these shared experiences that we can treasure for a lifetime, but most of all, I love that for the rest of our lives we will experience all these places together. And for me, all the trips that we have taken and things we have done all hinged upon this one trip: San Antonio - 2006. If this trip would've gone badly who knows where we'd be today. She went to the doctor for what she thought was a routine visit and ended up being diagnosed with breast cancer. She just found out this week that she may be fighting an even tougher battle. But this is not what defines her - she is a unique individual living her life who just happens to have cancer. Her optimism is an inspiration to us all. Journaling reads: When I began this journey last September, I had no idea where this road would take me. I went to the doctor to get help with losing weight and to stop smoking. Little did I realize that I would be undergoing months of radiation and chemotherapy. A diagnosis of breast cancer changed my daily routine of babysitting grandchildren, visiting with my good friends and neighbors, and occasional trips with my husband who is a long haul truck driver. I was scared and devastated at first, but I was determined that I was going to live my life and live it my way. I don’t do cancer every day. No one is guaranteed anything in life so I’m not going to waste my time on things I cannot control. I have dealt with a masectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, hair loss, hair growth, weight gain, weight loss, nausea, constipation and every other symptom you can name. I have had x-rays, mri, ct scans. port flushes, blood counts and numerous other procedures. But the thing that sticks in my mind the most is all the people I have met and shared experiences with that I would not have otherwise met. My journey is not over. I am still smoking and still need to lose weight. I will continue to meet new people and have new experiences and never forget what a journey my life has been and will be. Thanks for looking and be sure to keep her in your prayers.

13 comments Fri, 24 Jul 2009 03:02:03 +0000 Oh! Anna Aspnes - Journaling Challenge 7-19 Katie Pertiet - Shimmer Clusters no 2 Font: FG Wurth I am just starting to get my facebook page going, inspired by a desire to find out what is happening to friends that I haven’t seen now that we have moved to Lansing and I don’t have much of a social life other than pushing toddlers on swings in the backyard. A friend sent me this picture to put as my avatar on the site, since I didn’t have one yet. The boys - not ever willing to let me use the computer long by myself, came over to sit on my lap. Colin and the left, Owen on the right, they immediately began to ask questions. “Who is that Mommy?”, inquired Colin, pointing at me on the screen. I was FLOORED. Flabbergasted. “That’s me.” Owen queried “Why are you dressed like that game?” The bottom dropped out of my stomach. Sure, I had given up playing when I became pregnant. Sure, I have been too busy and too budget conscious to start playing again, but - this picture is ME. This is my internal view of myself. This is where I have been - Perhaps never terribly good, but dedicated. Five to Seven times a week. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. From the moment I started until the day we found out we were having twins, I lived and breathed hockey. This was how I saw myself - a hockey player. Those early morning skates at Munn. Getting there early so I could be the first one out, before all of the lights had come on in the arena. The crisp smell of ice that had been sitting, undisturbed, over night. The sounds of my skate scraping against the hard ice. The smooth surface left from the zamboni the night before The cold air in my face as my skates sped me across the rink. How could my own kids not know that was me? It was then, at that moment, that I decided that the places I have been will also be the places I will go - even if it may take awhile to get back there. Maybe not in exactly the same way, maybe not as often, but it will happen, this I promise myself.

17 comments Thu, 23 Jul 2009 03:41:50 +0000 Oh! Already that list has evolved. Some I’ve accomplished, some I’ve outgrown, and some have been added. So many adventures await. And yet, so many adventures have already taken place... Being born to Peace Corps parents in Panama was a very good start. I’ve walked the lava fields in Hawaii, hiked the Grand Canyon North to South, played among the ruins of Greece, been offered 1,000 cows for my hand in marriage in Egypt, went parasailing on the coast of France, ate gelato in Italy, cruised the fjords of Norway, went snorkeling in Tahiti, swam with the sharks in the Bahamas and the dolphins in Mexico, hiked around Ayers Rock in Australia, smelled the sulpher in New Zealand’s Rotorua, sailed from Martinique to Guadelupe aboard the “Tortuga”, went scuba diving in Belize, and rapelled waterfalls in Costa Rica. I’ve lived in Panama, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nevada, Arizona, Tennessee, Louisiana, Nevada again, Missouri again, Illinois, and back to Nevada. Home for now. I was thinking about this very thing this past week. Even to the point of the different “kinds” of places I’ve been. In the end I thought about how men just don’t change like women do. I for one have changed drastically since I was younger and some of it I’m fine with and some of it . . . well, I don’t really have a choice now do I. Oh, wait, I left most of those things out. ;O) Journaling: When I was a kid growing up I had 5 siblings under me. My mother didn’t live in the same state she grew up in and neither did my father. I use to think how great it was going to be when my siblings and I grew up and moved to different states. We would be able to see 5 states each! Well, turns out I’m the only one who moved away. The military let me see several states and several more countries. I got to go on a “snap shot” bus tour of Europe when I was in college and on a cruise to the Bahamas. This is all wonderful and I would love to see more. But, the geographical places that I’ve been are a totally different thing than the “places” I’ve been emotionally. I’ve experienced tomboy to formal dresses pack rat to “get rid of it” high school dances and camping with friends living at home to college dorm life and first apartment living on green beans and baked potatoes to not having to count my money at the grocery store dating to marriage air force life and traveling Europe motherhood cooking full course meals to pancakes for dinner raising boys the birth of a child and the death of one 3 jobs at once to stay at home mom a house full of boys (and their friends) to kids leaving home joy of having kids to feeling close to depression 24/7 mom to “what do I do with myself?” martyr mom to hiding candy doing it all to feeling guilty for not wanting to anymore taking time for me I feel like I’ve been 10 different people so far and that there are more to come. I’m guessing there will be and I’m looking forward to meeting them. I went with her because she didn’t want to go alone. The bailiff comes into the courtroom and starts reading off rules of behavior. One of the rules, was “no chewing gum allowed.” Linda leans over and whispers to me, “I have gum in my mouth and no way to get rid of it.” I leaned over, put out my hand, and said (deadpan), “Give it to me, I’ll swallow it.”. Linda burst into laughter and of course that just made me crack up too. We both got lectured by the bailiff. We spent 5 days together in June putzing around south of Seattle in the jeep. Shopping, eating, graduation and parties. Laughter, teasing and crazyness! Loved it....and them so much.
