    moan groan

Ok I know I have read other people's woes and I have felt sorry for them and you know it never is real until it's you.

So my moan groan is my External Hard drive ( where ALL my photos and scrap lo's and kits are) is B-R-O-K-E-N.

It is in ICU but noone knows if it will survive. The prices attached are ICU prices so I hope the life can be resurrected. I am in BIG trouble with a client convention from this weekend if they don't.

    hold thumbs ....

Not only hold thumbs please know that all of my dd kits are on there too .... so my lo's are going to be only NEW dd -- a reason to shop I suppose !

we just signed up for carbonite.com - $49.95 a year to keep a backup of our internal and external harddrives....

and I am going to get another ehd just for digi stuff - cause psd files and kits and elements sure do take up alot of space...

  13. wishing your ehd a full and speedy recovery Sam! Fingers crossed . . .

Mary mentioned Carbonite. I have used it for 2 years now and 6 months ago when I lost data, I simply logged into my Carbonite account and had recovered all my photos, layouts, and scrapping materials within minutes. It is definitely worth the $49 per year!

Jill, I am sooo glad you posted this about your Carbonite account. We are looking to have an offsite backup and this seemed so much easier to me than burning DVD's and taking them to someone else's house. My husband read somewhere that the restore process at Carbonite took days. Now we can do this easily without having to cart out DVD's to our daughter's.

calm is not even an option. I would be a desperate wreck if I didn't think anything but the BEST possible outcome. It's only the price I am panicking about ..... the data WILL be recovered.

My problem with somethng like carbonite is that we have "limited" bandwidth on a monthly basis ( its a south african thing. Bandwidth is expensive and I have loads compared to the norm), we have 9gb a month and my ehd that just crashed is 500gb.
So I know the backup file would be smaller but how much smaller?

Anyone clever enough to answer this ?

Thanks so much for all your kind thoughts. I should hear today about the diagnositics. and I may be needing taking donations ... hahahahahah

The news is bad. in fact it couldn't be worse ! everything is gone. EVERYTHING. All my photos and all my lo's and kits !

So I shall remain here weeping. I am absolutely shocked to be honest.

word from me --find out how to backup even ginormous files that bomb during backup so you rely on the technology you have cos it always works.

OH .... I am at a loss for words. That is horrible. I am so sorry for you.
Ask them to check again - our harddrive also "burned" a year ago and I asked him to check once more and he recovered most of it.
Or take it somewhere else perhaps.

THis reminds me to backup too.....soon.

    Ouph, that sucks big time.

Sam.....get a 2nd opinion!!! I don't know how well you now the person who gave you the final answer but our hard drive was bad a few months ago & I was freaking out too...we took it to a so called 'expert'....even where we bought the computer & they said everything was gone. I was devastated. My DH decided as a last resort to get a 2nd opinion (since I was so depressed) and they were able to copy and transfer it.
I realise it may not be the same senario...but unless you 100% know the person that looked at your computer, I'd get the 2nd opinion just incase

  25. OMG Sam...definitely get another opinion...there is got to be a way to fix this!! Have you contacted the manufacturer of the EHD? DO they have someone they would send it to....
Here is sending you more positive vibes...

To answer a few questions and thoughts:

I took it to the place I purchased it and they passed me from this one to that and I landed up at the recommended recovery place. That's who said there is no way of recouping anything. They say the disc is so scratched and damaged. I still don't get how that can happen cos it was working one moment and not the next.

I will definately get a 2nd opinion ..... cos if I can recover the stuff I must try. I have taken my Compact flash card to see if they can at least get some of the photos from the event I photographed last weekend. ( yes I formatted after and reused partially but I might be lucky)

I really want to say I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It makies me feel so much better to know that some people GET YA. and everyone here has been so kind and I really appreciate it.

Sam so sorry to hear this. I do know how you feel - my hdd crashed 18months ago. The shop and so-called experts, etc said it couldn't be fixed. I took it to the forensic specialists (like police and private detectives use) who were going to charge a fortune if it was recoverable. It wasn't. I only lost 6 months worth of photos (and genealogy research!) but I was devastated. Still am actually (I still have it tucked away just in case one day ...). Although mine was working fine one minute then not the next they think a power surge would have damaged it - they gave up counting after finding 20,000 errors!! It was only about 2 years old.
So sorry - but fingers crossed about a second opinion. At least they seem to work pretty fast in SA - here in NZ it took a month to give me the bad news!!

This is simply tragic. I'm with you in thinking it couldn't possibly be fine one minute and then irreparably scratched the next. All your gorgeous pages are flashing before my eyes... I will keep my fingers crossed!
