    It's on its way!!!!

Ladies, you've all been so helpful - thank you!

I have managed to do a great deal on my first DSLR in a private buy and it should arrive next week. YAY!!!

I'm getting a second hand Canon 450D (also known as the Rebel XSi) coupled with a with a brand new 50mm f/1.8 lens (still with warranty etc). I didn't have much to spend but I think I did pretty well. The seller upgraded to a Sony A77, thus his reason to sell. I asked lots of questions and stuck to my guns!

So I realise it is not the 'best' camera out there and a later model, but it should be a good entry level DSLR camera and lens for me while I learn the ropes.

Any suggestions on what other kind of lens I should look at buying second hand? I'd like to get a zoom lens now, but I'm obviously still on a budget.

TIA!! (and I apologise now for all the questions I will be asking!!!)

Great news Jenelle! I think you will be really happy with the Rebel! As for zoom lenses, I have the Cannon 75-300, which works great at sporting events, but for everyday I wanted a longer range than I had with my kit lens without the need to change lenses, so I saved my pennies for a long time to get the Tamron 18-270 mm. It has become my everyday lens and I love it!

That is so exciting!! They all have the same important functions, so you will have a lot to play with there!
So you just have the 50mm? There are quite a few options depending how far you want to zoom and whether you want wide angle as well. I haven't been able to find any quality lenses for anything less than $500, but for about $500 you have a few options, particularly if you are prepared to look at Sigma and Tamron lenses as well.
The Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 is a nice zoom range. I had that for a while but wanted to zoom further. I decided to replace that one lens with two Tamron lenses 28-75mm and 70-300mm.
Camera: Canon 7D, Olympus OM-D E-M5, Olympus TG2 (point and shoot)
    Lenses (for the 7D): Tamron F2.8 28-75mm, Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 and Sigma 50mm f/1.4
    Software: CS6.0, LightRoom 5, ACDSee 14

Oh I am so excited for you Jenelle! For so long my DH suggested I get a DSLR, and I always said 'Oh, I don't need that.' Then in November of 2008 I got my first one as an early Christmas gift from him. BLOWN AWAY is the only way to describe how I felt. A whole new world, no exaggeration! You are going to have SO MUCH FUN!!!

So very exciting!! You will love having a dSLR! I've had one for two years now and I'm still learning!! A lens that you might want to look into is a wider angle lens...that is if you are only getting the nifty fifty for now. At times there just isn't enough space to back up so you can get the entire picture!
