Default Katie's Drop Shadows

I love them. I used them all the time in PSE 4. I just upgraded to PSE 7 and I can't figure out where to put them! Can I get some help? Please? Thanks!

What is your operating system? Windows XP or Windows Vista? The instructions vary a bit from each other.

Follow these directions to copy the actions to PSE7

Installation Path:

Start Menu
My Computer
Local Disk C: (This could possibly be a different letter, but is usually C and most likely will be your computer’s root directory.)
Documents and Settings
All Users
Application Data (If you don’t see this, it’s probably hidden. Go to Start/Control Panel/Classic View/Folder Options/View and select Show Hidden Files & Folders)
Adobe
Photoshop Elements
7.0
Photo Creations
Photo Effects

Test out your installation by opening an image and:

Click on the Filters button. This is the first button on the left under the word Effects. Then click again on the Photo Effects Button.

That should do it!

Pattie,

Thanks. I tried this and it gets into the Filter bin as a single button (unlike the multiple buttons I had in PSE4) and when I click on it, I get an error message that tells me it is not compatible with this version of photoshop.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Toni

Hmmm...not sure. Are you talking about Katie's Drop Shadow STYLES or actions? (Just to be sure we are on the same page.)

I've never tried to load either into PSE (I use PSCS4) but I do have PSE7 on my system. Once I'm sure which you're talking about I'll try installing them into PSE7 myself and see if I can shed any light on your problem.

Pattie,

They are her styles...ASL file...I guess that might be the issue?

Thanks.

Here are directions from Linda Sattgast as written for Adobe. (Linda is fabulous and her directions are much better than anything I could write!)

Step 1: Place Your 3rd Party Layer Style Inside Photoshop Elements 7

• If Photoshop Elements 7 is open, close it.

• Navigate to the layer style you intend to install inside PSE7. If you have styles inside a previous version, navigate to the folder where they reside in that version. Right click on the layer style and choose Copy from the pop up menu. You can copy more than one layer style at a time. Simply click on one and Ctrl click on additional layer styles. Then right click and choose Copy.

• Navigate to the layer styles folder inside Photoshop Elements 7.

In Vista the path is:
Start > Computer > Local Disk (C) > ProgramData > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > 7.0 > Photo Creations > layer styles

In Windows XP the path is:
Start > Computer > Local Disk (C) > Documents and Settings > All Users > Application Data > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > 7.0 > Photo Creations > layer styles

• Right click inside the layer styles folder and choose Paste from the pop up menu.

Step 2: Create A Metadata File For Your Layer Style

• Right click on one of the metadata files and choose Copy from the pop up menu.

• Right click on your desktop and choose Paste to place a copy of the metadata file on your desktop.

• Highlight the first part of the name, in my case Wow Plastic, and change it to the name of your layer style, in my case Scrapper's Guide Glitter. The name of my file now reads: Scrapper's Guide Glitter.metadata.

• Don't try to double click on the copied metadata file to open it. Instead, right click on it and choose Open with > Notepad to see the code.

• Start at the top and scan down until you find the name of the original layer style. I found the title I was looking for on the 5th line: WowPlastic=Wow Plastic.

• Highlight the name before the equation sign and change it to the name of your layer style with no spaces between the letters, but do use capital letters when appropriate. In my case, I would type Scrapper'sGuideGlitter.

• Highlight the name of the style after the equation sign and change it to the name of your layer style with spaces between the words, e.g. Scrapper's Guide Glitter. Don't add any other spaces or change anything else. If you happen to have a one word name, such as Glitter, it would look like this: /Glitter=Glitter"

• Right after the category line you just changed, you'll see rows of code that give the names of the individual styles within that layer style. Highlight all of these lines, making sure you don't include the very last short line that says . Press the Backspace key to delete them. Leave one line of space between the last line and the previous lines.

• Choose File > Save (at the top of the open Window) to save the changes, and then close the document.

• Click and drag your new, saved file into the layer style folder inside Photoshop Element 7 (see Step 1 for the file path if you already closed this window).

• If you're installing more than one layer style, you'll need to follow the same steps to create a metadata file for each style.

Step 3: Get Your Layer Styles To Show Up In The Effects Palette

• From the layer styles folder within Photoshop Elements 7, click the Back button two times until you reach the folder that contains the ThumbDatabase.db3 file.

• Right click on the file and choose Delete. Click okay when you get a dialog box asking if you really want to delete the file.

• Close the window and start Photoshop Elements 7. When the Welcome Screen comes up, click on Edit. When the Editor desktop appears, you'll also see a dialog box that says "Building Content and Effects." This will take awhile, usually 5 minutes or more.

• When Photoshop Elements 7 is done building content and effects and the dialog box disappears, open the Effects palette and click on the second icon at the top of the Effects palette to get layer styles. Open the Layer Styles menu, and you should see the layer style you just installed in the list of available styles.

Glad to hear that everything worked out for you Toni! (But it's really Linda who deserves the thanks.)

What about for PSE6? I looked and I don't have a folder labeled as Layer Styles. I'm trying to install the curled edges and can't figure it out.

Here are the instructions for installing a Style in PSE6 (Windows XP)

1. Make all of your folders visible by going to Start > My Computer > Local Disk (usually called C) > Documents and Settings > All Users

At the top of the All Users folder, select Tools > Folder Options
Select the View tab and under the Hidden Files and Folders section click "Show Hidden Files and Folders" then click Apply.

2. Close PSE

3. Find the Designer Digitals folder you have downloaded and unzipped. Right-click to copy the .asl file in that folder.

4. Go to Start > My Computer > Local Disk (usually called C) > Documents and Settings > All Users > Application Data > Adobe >Photoshop Elements > 6.0 > Locale > Photo Creations > Layer Styles
Right click and select "paste" to paste the file inside the Layer Styles folder.

5. Open PSE6. The style will appear in the "show all" section of the Styles Palette.

Katie's Drop Shadow Action Set is the one I have (but I can only get a couple of the actions work in PSE).

I haven't installed PSE 8 yet (it's on my bookcase!) but I would not survive without Katie's drop Shadow styles! Last time wonderful Sara helped me install them into PSE 6. Now I need help for installing them into PSE 8. I have Vista.

Hope one of you talented ladies can help.

I'm curious as to why someone would buy this when you can apply the shadows yourself in PSE using the Effects button. Just wondering???

IMO Katie's are light years better than the ones that come in photoshop. To me hers are tailored for scrapbooking specifically. Shadows can really make or break a digital page... so worth the money!!!
