Default trouble with my focus....

i have a nikon d80 and when i focus on an object and then move my camera so that my object is no longer centered before snapping the picture, the focus loses on my object and my camera automatically refocuses on something else. is it just a simple setting to make my focus hold on my object????

Nope not really. If you hold your shutter button half way and don't move your finger off it does keep the focus but its not that easy to do.

lololol there is a AE button and if you hold that I find it keeps the focus as well.

There MAY also be a setting in your camera like focus on closest thing and I think that would change it as you move.

I seem to have perfected it most of the time, but I am struggling to explain it

Is it possible that you have your camera set to the continuous focus setting; sometimes if that option is selected, the camera will keep trying to re-focus, like you mentioned. Here's a website I found that has a video detailing the focus options on the D80...maybe this will help? I find that these kinds of videos are a lot easier to "get" than the manual, sometimes! good luck!
