Woo-hoo--lucky you! I'm not an expert by a long shot, but I got the 28-135 with my 40D in May, and I've been happy with it as a walk-around lens. The reviews are pretty good, and my guess is that you won't do much better price-wise. The advice I got when I was wondering whether to get the kit lens or not was to go for it, and I have no regrets--so take that for what it's worth (maybe not much!).

I'm another vote for the 28-135. Admittedly, I usually use my 50mm most of the time, but if I want a general carry round, capture more than just portraits type of lens, this is what I take. I do find it frustratingly slow compared to my lovely 50mm, but it's doing a different job and it's not as obtrusively large as my 70-200.

I'm going to go in a different direction here
![]() If you can justify about $250 more than the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 I'd go for the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens. It is a great wide angle lens that I use as my walking around lens. It gives you the L glass which is YUMMY and a range that you don't have with your other lenses! IMHO

Well, I left for Houston not long after posting this thread and ordered the 40D with the 28-135 as I was going out the door. Thanks for the suggestions ... Katrina, I had been looking at the lens you suggested as well, but decided to wait. Anyhow, we're back from vacation and I have just enough time to get caught up on being gone before the camera and lens get here on Thursday. Now, I'm debating whether I sell my rebel or keep it for my daughter. She has a great point and shoot, but she's on the HS newspaper staff and will be taking photos as well as taking photography next year. Mike suggested keeping it.
