Default Lens advise

As I was taking my husband to the airport today he casually said, why don't you order that camera you've been looking at (upgrading to the Canon 40D). Well, you don't need to tell me twice. However, I am debating getting just the body or with the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. I would like a general lens besides my 50 mm and 70-300 mm. Something good for traveling. I can't justify L glass just now. Any advice?

Carol

Woo-hoo--lucky you! I'm not an expert by a long shot, but I got the 28-135 with my 40D in May, and I've been happy with it as a walk-around lens. The reviews are pretty good, and my guess is that you won't do much better price-wise. The advice I got when I was wondering whether to get the kit lens or not was to go for it, and I have no regrets--so take that for what it's worth (maybe not much!).

I'm another vote for the 28-135. Admittedly, I usually use my 50mm most of the time, but if I want a general carry round, capture more than just portraits type of lens, this is what I take. I do find it frustratingly slow compared to my lovely 50mm, but it's doing a different job and it's not as obtrusively large as my 70-200.

I'm going to go in a different direction here

If you can justify about $250 more than the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 I'd go for the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens. It is a great wide angle lens that I use as my walking around lens. It gives you the L glass which is YUMMY and a range that you don't have with your other lenses! IMHO

Well, I left for Houston not long after posting this thread and ordered the 40D with the 28-135 as I was going out the door. Thanks for the suggestions ... Katrina, I had been looking at the lens you suggested as well, but decided to wait. Anyhow, we're back from vacation and I have just enough time to get caught up on being gone before the camera and lens get here on Thursday. Now, I'm debating whether I sell my rebel or keep it for my daughter. She has a great point and shoot, but she's on the HS newspaper staff and will be taking photos as well as taking photography next year. Mike suggested keeping it.

I kim my original digi rebel in my camera bag just in case I ever need it. It gives me a nice feeling of comfort!
