I have no suggestions.....just sympathy for you!!
Maybe try it in aperture priority. Its pretty simple to use once you "get it". Or take it to your local camera store and see if they can help. Usually they will play with it and if it can be fixed by settings or something they shouldnt charge you. Just thought of this too, does your camera have "exposure compensation"? I had mine set wrong for the first few months of shooting...mine were underexposed though. I am not sure if this can even work in "auto" but check your manual. (I have a nikon or I would walk you through where to find it)
