Default Restoring old photos

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this thread but I would love to know how my fellow scrappers restore their old colour photographs. I've currently been working on 25 to 30 year old photos of family and am using a combination of Noiseworks and Photoshop CS2 to get rid of the graininess and reset the colours. It's been a bit hit and miss and I'm sure that many of you would be better at it than me and have a good system. Here is one that I've done - it had a horrible yellow colour cast on the original and is much improved but I would really appreciate any advice.
Cheers,
Susie.

I bought Matt Kloskowski's Restoration and Retouching Book- he has many wonderful ideas to help out with this problem. Also tried many of the tricks in the Scott Kelby book for digital photographers. One tip that helped me was to remember the colors on the color wheel-if you have a yellow cast, perhaps a purple filter. Remember that complementary colors can neutralize each other.

I, also, have the Scott Kelby book for Digital Photographers -- I'll have to check out Matt Kloskowski's book also. You did an awesome job on the photo, I just recently checked on my 25 yr. old pictures and couldn't believe the damage already! I will have to try Noiseware, I've heard great things about it.

Another excellent book is "Photoshop Restoration and Retouching" by Katrin Eismann...she's the Queen in my opinion!

Gosh, so many quick replies. Thank you so much for all that info. I've certainly got some reading to do.

Debi, since you are on a Windows platform, try out Noiseware's community edition (free). It is more limited in certain ways than the purchased ones but a great place to start and see if you like it or not. You can always upgrade to a purchased version if you decide it is something you want.. which most likely once you try it, you will also fall in love with it.

I'm using the free version only at this stage and I can't believe the difference it makes to old scanned photos. It really cleans them up, almost to the point that they look like a digital shot.
