Default Help with photographing jewelry etc

After chats yesterday I decided I wanted to do a special layout about my Grandmother - unfortunately I have few photos of her....

But what I do have is her Antique China Teapot and cups/saucers and jewelry she passed on to me. I used to visit her house a few times a week and we always sat in the living room and had tea (in proper cups/sauces) and little sandwiches with crust cut off - wonderful memories.

I have a point and click camera - what I would like to know is the best background to use and how to position the items.

My kitchen has lots of natural morning light - so I don't need flash (unless it's necessary?)

I've tried before and results have been disappointing - especially pearls and broaches.

i would appreciate any tips and help.

Thanks -

What about a board draped with a velour-type fabric (dark blue, etc.) maybe also draped on table? You could always take separate pics then photoshop them together as you like? Just a suggestion as I am not a photographer, but I have done this successfully.

I just read some tips for photographing jewelry at the ehow.com website. Like Donna says, they recommend a dark background like a dark cloth or dark paper. For an even more professional look, they suggest a piece of black velvet. Another tip sheet at another site, suggested using a small piece of wax behind the object to tilt or lift off the background a pendant or a ring or the stone of an earring for the best view.

Or, what about getting someone to photograph YOU wearing the piece of jewelry. I think that would be a lovely photo to use on a scrapbook page along with the story of how the piece belonged to your grandmother and now you enjoy wearing it.

My suggestion is go to Debbie's gallery. She has some of the most beautiful photos of dishes, jewelry and other things of this nature that she has photographed in natural settings. You will be inspired.. :O)

Love, love, love Debbie's work. I think one of the most important things to remember about catching these types of photos is to GET IN CLOSE and LOW!
