Smile New lens?!

We've just returned from a wonderfully sunny week in Pembrokeshire, Wales and had a fab time!
I took my canon 500D (although I took a point and shoot for the 'messier' i.e beach and sea days! LOL). On my Canon I had the 50mm 1.8f - which I adore - the photographs are always so much better than the standard kit lens - however - my hubby grumbles about being too far from the subject when outdoors. And he does have a point - I don't mind using my legs as a zoom but when outside it's not always practical!
This has got me thinking about my next lens purchase - I have looked up the 85mm 1.8f and that has got good reviews and would get me in closer than the 50mm.
Any ideas folks on lens to fit my needs?? I know I have been spoilt by the 50mm as it's cheap and the image quality is fab!
Thanks
Georgina x

I have the Nikon version of the 85 1.8 and love it. It did take some getting used to. To get full body shots on a crop sensor, I have to get waaaay back.

You want to stick with a prime lens? You don't want a zoom? If you're looking for an outdoor lens you can get away with a smaller aperture. I've had an f/2.8 28-75 (Tamron) for ages and it seems to be a focal length & zoom that many others have on their cameras all the time. But since I got the Canon 18-200 f/3.5 I'm enjoying the extra zoom and it is my go-to lens for outdoor shots! Both lenses are reasonably economical.
