Default Hope I'm not making a mistake

A friend and I are heading to New York City tomorrow for a girls' week. I have decided against taking my big camera and am just taking my little Canon G9. The size and weight of the big camera scared me away from carrying it around all week. Have any of you made a similar decision? Were you sorry or glad?

Generally when I've gone anywhere with just my small camera I've regretted it. I imagine it would depend on how you use your camera.. I shoot a lot in manual and do a lot of adjusting for depth of field, etc so I get very frustrated with the p&s. HTH Have a wonderful time! BTW it's really really hot here so be prepared to melt on the streets of NYC

Not me! I have a G10 and love it! I do not like to go on vacation with the heavy camera and lenses.

I have back issues and have found that the weight of the camera around my neck decreases my enjoyment of a trip as we generally walk a lot. That said, I recently purchased the Black Rapid women's camera strap which allows me to sling the camera across my shoulder with the camera at my hip. I spent the entire day, July 1st, carrying my camera with the 24-70 mm lens on, with absolutely no issues. My local camera store had them in stock and it was an impulse buy which I have not regretted.

I usually carry my p&s too, for when I want to be less obtrusive taking photos. HTH. Enjoy your trip.

We just spent a week in New York, walking everywhere (talk about needing a break in the afternoons!). I carried my 40d with the 24-70mm everyday. Keep in mind though, that I take it with me most days at home and hike with it as well. My husband took his point and shoot, but it never left the hotel room!

You can get big girl photos with a little girl camera. It's the photographer, not the camera.

Are ya gonna be a photographer or a girl?

I've done it both ways and regret was part of both!!
The biggest issue for me is that I can't crop hard with the G9. But I love mine, too.
BUT, if you take the big one you will be interrupting the flow to take masterpieces...

Have a blast, suga.

It sounds like such a fun girl trip to go on. You take great photos no matter what, just enjoy first and foremost.

It's going to be 90+ degrees all week. I am so NOT a hot weather girl! Anything I can do to make it easier is what I must do. So I will go without my computer and with my little camera. If it weren't for my IPhone I'd be practically going naked! I'm planning a book about the trip for my friend. If the pictures don't turn out well, I can make a layout for the book about the heat and taking my little camera to explain it. Thanks for all your thoughtful recommendations. In the end, the heat decided.

Imperfect picutures (and I don't presume they will be) will be better than having hot sweaty hands trying to grip the Big Camera. They're already talking of a heat index in the 100s for most of this week until it actually does hit 100 on Friday. That's down here in MD. Make your week as fun as you can. Easy and fun. The memories will be better that way.

Buy postcards too and scan them. That could be a fun addition to a book if the photos don't work, but I have every faith in you.

Guess you are gone from home already Lynn . . . have a wonderful trip with your friend and your G-9! You will get fab photos with it . . . I have traveled with only my G-10 and didn't regret (too much) that my DSLR was resting at home.

You want to enjoy your holiday first. Great photos are a secondary consideration. If getting good (rather than great) photos means you enjoy your trip more then it's worth leaving the heavy camera behind!
