Default Portrait Photography Lens

Hello.

I am working to build my portfolio for my website Tk's Designz Design and Photography and have offered a group of mom's I know free family portraits. Now I am stumped on the lens choice. I don't know why this is always a dilemma for me.

I am photographing the families at the Garden of the Gods. There is a lot you want in some focus - mountains, rock formations so I was going to use my 50mm f/1.8 lens most of the time. I was thinking about renting the 24-70 mm f/2.8 or the 85mm f/1.8 for some different looks. There is a big price difference for the rental and I am photographing for free this time so I am not anxious to spend lots of money.

I am looking for suggestions please! The families are groups of 4-6 members 1- 2 adults with children.

I also have a Nikon D90 kit lens 18-105 f/3.5-5.6 but I get very little bokeh from this lens.

Thanks Teresa

If you have a D90, consider getting a 50mm 1.8 prime lens. its an ideal portrait lens for a DX camera and will only cost you about $100!!!

if you want different angles with rocks and stuff, rent the 24-70 so you can get some wide angles... or just rent any wide angle lens since you already have a portrait lens (50mm). i have a 20mm wide angle prime and its wonderful. I prefer prime lenses... although changing them out can be a hassle they give outstanding clarity.

i don't think you'll need higher than 85mm on a crop sensor camera like the d90 if you are photographing a pretty large family. if you go any higher than 50mm with your camera, you are looking at primarily shoulder length and above for a good shot.

since you already have the 50 mm I would rent the 24 - 70 mm. That's the one I use almost all the time, it's so versatile. Sounds like a fun project and a great opportunity! Good luck!
