Default De-compression???

I think I know the answer to this question--but hoping I'm wrong. I'm more arts-y than tech-y so I'll phrase this the best I can.

Son, DIL, and DIL's sister post tons of marvelous photos on Facebook (or from Picasa) of European travels--England, France, Italy. I'd like to scrap for them but when I save the photo from FB, I end up with a teeny tiny, highly compression, blurry, fuzzy image that can't successfully be scrapped. They all used decent digital p&s cameras, but I fear they shot at high compression for max number of images on the memory card.

Is there anything they can do or I can do to increase the quality of their photos for digital scrapping?

Thanks

Hi Marnie: I think the problem may be Facebook itself.. a lot of the social websites don't post the photos at high resolution they compress them to save space. Perhaps if they sent it directly to you it would work beter.

Thanks so much Donna! I wondered about that. For some reason, they all post on FB, but getting them to send the photos to me is like pulling teeth! But hey, if they want them scrapped....

Marnie, it could be that they have their settings such that no one is allowed to download any images.
Check this: (if you haven't already) Click on the image you want, then click on the "actions" drop down menu above the image, then click on "view all sizes". If they've got their settings for sharing, then you should be able to download several different sizes.
If not, maybe you could ask them to change their settings?! Good luck!

Oh dang...never mind...I thought you were asking about Flickr!!! Well, I'm no help at all!!!

I've scrapped facebook pics a few times, but they have to remain small.
My pages: here and here. Mel has scrapped a few, too, of her daughter's trip to Spain and her son's trip to Cyprus a year or so ago - like this and this and this and this and this and this (LOVE this last one!).
Perhaps you could use the facebook pics for photo collages and request a few originals to enlarge on the facing pages?

Wow, thanks so much Esther! My DIL's sister just emailed me some better quality photos. For the smaller ones, I'm definitely lifting some of the wonderful examples you've posted here! A photo collage page opposite a larger singular photo sounds great!

Wow! Missed that one! I'll have to give it a try one day. I imagine it would give you the ability to blow up a little larger but still not nearly as good as the original. The software is still having to inventing missing pixels even if it is using very clever fractal mathematics.
Now, we see it on CSI all the time... "I'll just zoom in ..."!! Perhaps we could ask them
