Default Canon Telephoto Lens Help

I have been asked several times to take photos for sporting events. Normally I just do it for my daughters sport and pass them on to other parents. Now word has spread and I'm getting special requests. Most have been parents that have bought from me in the past. I'm teetering on going into business. Not sure how I feel about my hobby turning into a business has been my holdback.
I'm looking into all my options and I know my current lenses doesn't fit the bill. I have a Canon 75-300mm and a Canon 18-200mm EF-S IS Lens. I'm thinking about a Canon telephoto L series lens. I did rent a from borrowlense a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM for a football game. Frankly I missed that extra distance of 300 or more! When I would crop I felt it was not as sharp as it could have been. Making me have to capture the person in tight. Hard to do in football when you want the action shots. The request this week is for a High School track meet. So distance is definitely a must.
So what has been your experience with the L series lens? The 100-400 is 4.5-5.6 IS. The 70-300 is a 4.5-5.6 IS USM. While the 70-200 is a 2.8 IS. And of course, I have to keep my position in mind. Sun will be setting and the darkness will be a factor as well. Decisions, decisions, decisions! HELP!

I've been looking at the 28-300 L but it is very pricey and I need to hold off for a while since I have, shall we say, INDULGED my lens lust enough for awhile. I'll be interested to know what you do.

Kris . . .
I am sure that someone will see this that may be able to advise you. I know that you are a wonderful sports photographer and that you will make many parents happy with shots that you take of their children.

I just returned from the baseball games of two grandchildren . . . shooting through chain link fences is just the pits! I take my hat off to you!!! Luck with your decision on a lens.

LOL Mollie. Chain link fences are a photographers menace! I constantly wish for fields that are photographer friendly.
