It depends on how you have your settings. In preferences, you can go to external editing and choose what program you want to use and what file format you want it to save the image. Since I work in raw, my original image is DNG, when I move over to Photoshop, it saves it in PSD format next to the original image. SO I always have that original image to go back to if I want to try again.

I use lightroom sparingly. I know it is very powerful and I should use it more... but this is what I do: My camera is set to take both raw and jpg images. I usually only work with the jpgs. If I want to tweak the color balance or exposure I open the raw file in LightRoom and after making changes I export a new jpg. I like to rename the jpg with the action or adjustment so that I can remember but I usually don't get around to it!

I do what Sharon does.
I make the adjustments I want in Lightroom, then if it needs extra work i open it as a smart object in Photoshop, make the changes i want and then choose save upon closing it. It then automatically gives me a .psd file with all the changes in it in Lightroom alongside the original file.
