Default Found Av priority on my Canon

My brother suggested I use Av when I was trying to get some indoor photos of his baby on a murky British Day. I used to just use P and set the ISO and WB, but I must admit I am finding Av working for both inside face-photos with short depth of field AND outside landscape photos.

ANyone else out that uses this setting much and any other tips until ENgland get's it's 2 week quota of sunshine sometime mid-June

Thanks
S

Hi Sarah,

AV or AP (Nikon) mode is really the best way to go on your settings. This gives you total control over your depth of field while using the camera's built in logic to control the shutterspeed. Every professional photographer that I've worked with uses this mode most of the time (manual in the studio). Good luck with it!

Oh, Sarah, the world of light control is about to open up for you. Regardless of weather. Congrats on the new exploration.

I learned all about AV from Katrina's class and tutorials and I couldn't be happier.

Love aperture priority -- use it all the time!

I believe there is an ebook in the store that can help you out with that too

Love Get me off auto! Need to be a proper student rather than just look at the cool photos though!

I've been using AV more and more frequently over the last year!
Especially when shooting concerts while being on tour!

Sarah, glad you found it. I use it all the time, and would be going through my GET ME OFF AUTO, but I need glasses so I can see things better. To make it worse, I need bifocals, but shoot without glasses, and end up using either Auto/AV or TV, but I never know for sure if things are working the way I want unless I sit down with my glasses to review. I will get off auto when I get out there and get contacts, as my dd is yelling at me to do!

You sound so excited...I love it!! I have a Canon 30D and I find that my inside photos are pretty grainy on AV mode... I wonder if it's me, my camera, or something else...

Congrats Sarah! I have no tips..just explore and figure out what your camera can and can't do by taking lots of pictures. Your 365 photos look great so I'm guessing you are doing just that!

I'm about to try it too. For some reason I had it in my head that I needed to shoot on manual ALL the time. And I'm slow at it so it's frustrating for me. I went to a seminar yesterday where the teachers themselves used it. I suddenly felt like I had permission to use the camera in a way that was easier!

My only trouble is that I tend to set it on f2.8 and leave it there all the time. And sometimes a deeper depth of field is required so I have to remember to change it!
