Default African Lens help.....Sam....anyone?

Hi all, so excited just booked an African safari trip through the Smithsonian Museum for next Sept. 2011. I will fly into Joburg and safari through S.Africa for 2 weeks. My Question: Should I purchase the 2X extender? (a new one is coming out this December) I am taking two bodies (Canon). 1 body will house my 24-70 L lens and 1 body will house my 70-200 L 2.8 lens with a 1.4x extender. I have been reading a lot on the web and most say you want to get to a focal length of 400mm. I can achieve this if I get the 2x extender but is it necessary? It would also drop my f stop a little. Any suggestions? TIA Kathryn

Can't give you any advice on the lens, Kathryn, but just wanted to say WOW what a cool trip. Looking forward to seeing those pictures!

If I was packing my bag for that trip I would rent a 400mm lens

If that wasn't possible, I'd definitely get the extender. 200mm just won't be long enough!

What an amazing experience you're going to have!

wonderful trip!!

I would say 200mm+extender... we have 100-400mmL and it's heavy!!! you would need a tripod
so it also depends on how you gonna travel and what you can have with you (bus, Jeep...)

I'm no help on the lens issue, but I am so, so envious... that is my #1 dream vacation! Which some day will happen!
