Default I dropped it...

Always have my dSLR with me in my trusty Crumpler 6 Million $ bag. Went into public restroom... hung bag on door hook... bag dropped down with a very hard clunk. Couldn't look until I got home. Kit tele was on camera and it was nose down. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the lens cap smushed into the lens filter. I "pried" it off to find... only the filter shattered. Lens seems to be ok. Lessons learned... don't place bag that high off ground and... ALWAYS use a filter... to protect the lens if for nothing else. It's not a great kit lens... but it's all I have for tele now. Could have been a lot worse...

Carol . . . what a heart stopping moment you had.

I'm so happy for you that "it could have been a lot worse" . . . and that your filter protected your lens. I took a brand new lens on a trip in july . . . forgot to order a filter for it . . . the lens got scratched. Mine could have been a lot worse too . . . the scratch was minor . . . and now I have a filter on it for my next travels!

We do live and learn from experience, don't we! I'm glad that you had a happy ending!

I had the same results (at the airport) when I flung my camera bag out of the trunk of the car that was dropping us off. Took till we got thru to the gate before my heart went into my stomach. HOORAY....just the filter broken. I FEEL your pain...and your relief!!

You were lucky on that one.

I agree about your thought of the filter as an extra protection. I have a lens with a filter on it that go bumped into something hard. The filter took all the damage, thank you. But the filter will not come off now. I have tried up the the point of breaking the lens. Good news, though, is that I can still take photos with no ill effects on the final photo. I get funny looks with that lens on the camera but it works fine.

Oh my goodness... I don't like using filters, but this is scary. I am also a big klutz... perhaps it is time to invest in some quality UV filters/.....???

Oh my word, how scary, I don't think I would have been able to wait to see the damage. I have filters on my 3 lenses.

My heart fell when I read that title but phew...glad to hear it wasn't any more serious than that. I think I'm wise to stick to my iPhone.

I used to put filters on all my lenses but was persuaded that if you've got good glass you just don't want to put a filter on it, no matter how good the filter is. So what's a girl to do? At present I'm just protecting the lens with a hood, no cap and no filter. Am I crazy?
