Default Nikon D90 and 50mm 1.8D Users: HELP!

My mom said that this was an excellent place to find answers regarding camera issues, and since I'm sure that this is a blonde moment on my part, I'm sure you guys will have some answers for me!

Here's the thing: I am the proud owner of a Nikon D90, and had been considering buying a 50mm 1.8D lens for a while. My parents gave me the lens tonight as an early birthday present, and I immediately went to try it out.

First problem: When I went to mount the 50mm to my camera, I had a difficult time screwing it on. I am always reluctant to force any mechanisms on my equipment, but it took a bit of oomph for this lens to click into place. Is that normal?

Second: I turned on the camera and shot a few rounds, and was pleased. But when I tried to control the aperture on the lens itself (unlocking it from 22 and switching it to some other aperture), my monitor's f/stop gauge would flash "EE". All was fine when I controlled the aperture from the camera, but the camera wouldn't let me release the shutter when I was manually controlling the aperture. The instructions that came with my lens didn't offer any help regarding how to operate the lens. Any tips?

I know that I'm probably overlooking something really obvious (I have multiple blonde moments every day), but I'm sure you all understand just how personal a camera can be to a photographer, especially you're like me, and babysat for hundreds of hours to save up for your camera So you can see how reluctant I am to force any part of the lens and risk breaking it. Any advice would be warmly appreciated, thank you!

my monitor's f/stop gauge would flash "EE".
Your lens is probably equipped with an aperture ring, make sure it is locked in the highest F number.

I'm not sure about that lens. I have the 1.4, and I know I get that error when I accidentally flip that tiny little switch on the lens.

As an owner of a D90 and a 50mm f1.8 - you should have no worries.
It does take a big "click" to snap the lens into place. Make sure the little dots are aligned, both on the camera and the lens before you screw it on.

And as already was mentioned - you need to have the aperture ring set to the highest aperature (on the lens) and there is a little flip/button there to lock it in place. Do this.
Some times it comes undone. But now you know what to do.

I recall the first time this happened to me. I freaked out.

But it is normal behavior.

Have fun with your excellent camera and lens!!

Keep it on f/22 at all times. Control the aperture within the camera controls ;-)
Also, if you get an EE, try taking the memory card out and then put it back in... Or take off and remount the lens. I found that my 50mm on my D90 is a bit snug too.
