Default Quick tips on external flash?

It feels like forever since I've been able to catch up on posts and the gallery! Busy end of the summer!
Anyway, I have the great honor of being the photographer for Jalen's T/Th class and I have a feeling I am going to be taking a lot of indoor shots. I've really tried to avoid using flash as much as possible lately, but with kids, inside, I think it's going to be impossible not to. So, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for a fairly inexpensive external flash (I don't know if that's even the right term...the kind you stick on your camera as opposed to the one it comes with) that I could get to try? I don't have much of a budget at all for this right now, but I'd love to get started right!
Thanks!

Not sure if you are shooting Nikon or Canon but for Nikon a good cheap flash is the SB-400. Nothing fancy but will get the job done and you can rotate the flash head to bounce light off the cealing or add a bounce card if you would like.

Welcome. One thing I like about the SB-400 is when you flip the flash head up, a business card will fit perfictly in there to use as a bounce card.

I was just reading someone's review on Amazon that said that! I'll have to learn how to use a bounce card, but I know enough to know that it's a good thing!

Fun! If you can't dial it down on the flash you can dial it down using flash compensation on your camera too.

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

Yes, bouncing is a good thing. Let me know if you have any further questions that I can help with.
