I'm hoping that I can con someone into letting me off work early that day so that I can walk in Hamilton, Ontario. I really think that being with other photographers would help me improve.

Okay I just signed up in my home town of Geelong, a couple of hours away but I'll visit family that weekend too. Geelong is situated on a bay and the photowalk is apparently around that area.

Only three days 'till the photowalk--or two, if you don't count the rest of today or Saturday, at least I don't, because my walk is in the morning.
Our tiny town managed to squeak out 8 walkers, including the leader. Well, for a town with a "main street" only about four blocks long, that sounds like a good number to me. Late breakfast/early lunch after the walk, I'm told there are at least 2 professional photographers who will be there. I think it will be a great opportunity! For those of you who have walked before---should I bring all my lenses? I have a 50mm 1.8, an 18-70mm and a 75-300. We will be walking along a small riverbank, through an old, dilapidated downtown area, and possibly through some bayou landscape. I have to consider what I might be photographing. Probably the fast lens is not necessary since we'll be outside, though I can stop down the aperture and it is SO much sharper than my kit lenses. It's just that the fixed focal length limits me. Anyway. Any advice?

I'm wondering the same question Sarah. My walk is along the water front, the old buildings, the bollards, the carousel. I'm thinking I might take 2 lenses, but I have no idea. My favourite is my 50mm as well.

I too would like to know what the *experienced* walkers have to say since this will be my first *walk*...is this a case of first learning how to walk and then you can run! LOL

I'm bringing:
16-35mm f4 50mm f1.4 70-200mm f2.8 AND my Hoodman Loupe. This really helps see the LCD clearly. It is sooooo hard to view the LCD Pics or the histogram in bright sunshine.

Oh, I changed my walk to Tel Aviv.
It turns out that the Jerusalem walk was changed to Sunday in stead of Saturday so that religious photographers can join (Saturday is Shabat of course)..... So, me and a couple of others "walkers" changed to Tel Aviv. We will walk in the same district as last year, but never mind - I don't care. It's gonna be fun. 50 people have signed up!! We will see how many show up. |

I am really, really disappointed. It's a selfish disappointment that I shouldn't even be struggling with. After all, I live in a small town. "Downtown" is accessible to me every day, especially at sunrise and sunset, before my children get up and after they are in bed. I could do a photowalk any time.
A dear member of our church, an elder in our congregation and mentor to more people than he would ever know, lost his battle with gallbladder cancer last night. He was 84, and we all readily acknowledged he had a long, productive, and beautiful life. But none of us was ready to have him gone---when are you ever ready to say goodbye? He went into the hospital on June 16 complaining of pain in his side. They did exploratory surgery and to remove his gallbladder, found the cancer, stitched him up, and sent him home to wait out his days. He died at home with hospice care. Our entire congregation is grieving; we have only lost one other member in twenty years, and she died today a year ago. This weekend is a bitter anniversary as we remember Ann, and now we've said goodbye to Mr. Carter, too. So I cannot do the photowalk; I need to attend the service. It will undoubtedly be standing-room only, at least 500 people will be there in a tiny country funeral home. I would not be missed, nor am I so arrogant to think that people will look to see if I'm there. But I feel like I must be there, and so there is where I'll go. I hope everyone has a blast on your walks. I'll be thinking of y'all between the tears and laughter.

My heart goes out to you and you whole town. It is so very sad when we see the best go before their time and when so many people are affected it makes the grief so much bigger. Do your photo walk when you are feeling like chronically the life and times of how he made a difference to you and the people you know. It will probably be the best pictures that you taken in a long while. My thoughts are with you Sarah.
