I have a Canon 40D, so it's not a full frame, but I'm debating which zoom area to go for. I currently have a 50 mm and a 70-200.
So what I'm missing is the wide angle area. But I'm not sure if I should go for the 24-70 or the 17-50 (I've been looking at the Sigma lenses of this kind, both are f/2.8). The 24-70 won't be that wide on my camera, but it's still a nice zoom area. (I tried the new Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 in the store; the focusing was very fast.) Any suggestions?

I just got the Canon 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 for my 40D, and it's one you might want to take a look at unless the constant f/2.8 is important to you. My widest lens before was 28mm, and I am really having fun with the 15mm end. The IS is excellent, and since I typically use flash indoors anyway, I felt OK with the slower lens. And I really like the range. I've only had it a few days, but I'm very happy with it so far.

This is going to be a tough decision... (But a fun one, anyway!)

This keeps getting harder... I think I have to go back and try lenses once more.
The price is about the same for the two lenses I've been looking at, so I can't use that as an argument. The 17-50 has image stabilization. The 24-70 not. But the 24-70 works on a full-frame body if I want to upgrade some time. The 17-50 doesn't. I tend to take photos in the telephoto range. That shouts 24-70. (I'm just thinking out loud here.)

Another vote for the 24-70. I love mine!

I bought the 24-70 today! It was a tough decision, but I think it was a good one.
I haven't taken many pics yet, but I like it. It's so strange to walk around with a rather light weight zoom lens.
