It really depends on how much you want to spend. Katie uses a Nikon D90 and just loves it!

Have you invested in many lenses? If you have, I don't think I would have bought a Nikon... You'll get so much quality glass with $1500... Invest them in lenses! And upgrade to another Canon body when you outgrow you other Canon.

Sorry, I know that wasn't very helpful, but it's what I'd do.

Or buy the Canon 7D

Guess it depends on what you will be using the camera for. Are you going to be gradually replacing the Canon? The trouble with 2 different DSLR bodies is the number of lenses required if you are using one as a backup at a photoshoot or even for travel.

I also have a D300 and love it. I bought my first Nikon SLR over 30 years ago. I have 6 lenses 2 of which were purchased when I bought my first Nikon SLR. The good thing is that I can use all lenses on my D300. Doesn't mean though that I am not looking for more glass.

I never even thought about upgrading my Canon.. I have camera envy from when I was in Italy a few weeks ago, a family asked me to take their picture.. she had a Nikon. I loved everything about it.

LOL!

I'd say check out the Canon alternatives before switching... Canon 7D, the Canon 5D MkII... Both great cameras. The 7D did get some great reviews... But you won't get better photos than your lenses allow you, no matter what camera body you choose.

Good luck choosing, let us know what it is!

I completely agree with Anxela... if you already have some money invested in Canon products I would stick with Canon. They are both professional quality at that price point. Good luck and have fun with your new camera whatever you choose

Jen and may not be very objective about Canon cameras , but I can tell you that I was so close to switching to Nikon in favor of the D300, but then I did the math on what I had invested in my lenses and what the true cost of buying the D300 would be, and thought "nah".

Bought the 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens for Canon instead. Best choice I ever made. But I eventually did upgrade from a Digital Rebel to the 40D. I didn't really get the balancing of the *huge* 70-200 on that tiny camera body right

The Canon/Nikon war will go on and on. They will switch having what it considered the "best" intro-level, best mid-range and best professional camera literally every year.

After the Nikon D3 came out in 2007 there has been a huge shift to Nikon on the professional level. The D3x and D3s continue that trend.

And when Nikon came out with the 14-24mm 2.8 lens (which is the sharpest lens of it's kind out there) many Canon pro's tried to get that lens modified to work on Canon camera's...

BTW Nikon seems to be stumbling on their low end and really don't have a clear sense of direction.

I agree that the mid-range Nikon's and Canon's are on equal footing and if you already have money invested in quality Canon lenses stay there.

Randy, I totally agree with you - they seem to be concentrating their forces in different ends, while their mid-range cameras are what they are competing most about.

It seems like Canon is trying to get every first time DSLR buyer, their intro level cameras getting better and better, and now trying to keep them with the 7D as a real competitor to D300 and D300(s?). I do think that Canon was a little shocked when the D300 came out, they didn't have that kind of specs in that level, but did work hard to come up with something great - that being the 7D.

I'm just waiting for the next camera to get out in this war, it just keeps getting better.

Is there a huge gap in pricing between the Canon and Nikon professional level cameras?

Seems like the pricing is about the same BUT when Canon came out with their new pro dSLR in 2007 (EOS-1D Mark III) they had a large number of problems with the camera. These seemed to finally be resolved in 2009 with a firmware patch but the damage had already been done.

Thanks.

Oh, another question - is the 5D MkII considered a pro or semi-pro camera?

The 5D MkII is considered a High-end pro-sumer, low-end pro camera.

BTW, the new Nikon D3s has the ISO shooting capability of 102k which almost allows you to shoot normal in the dark. From what I'm hearing the FBI has placed a HUGE order and sucking up every one they can get their hands on.

I would think it would pretty noisy at that ISO. My understanding is that shooting at ISO 12,800 (normal high) the noise is the same as the old D3 shooting at 6,400 with very little noise.
