Default Bat mitzvah Photoshoot

Hello all.

I am helping a friend by photographing her daughter Bat mitzvah. Unfortunately, I do not have a flash or other lighting equipment. I have spoke with my local camera store and I can rent a flash for the weekend.

Do you know of websites or books that I can use to gain some knowledge and understanding of how to use the external flash? Also, I did review the link on the self made flash equipment but I was wondering what I could do to avoid the wash out from the flash. I mostly concerned about the photos in the Synagogue and during the evening party where I have limited natural light. I might have the opportunity to rent additional equipment as well but I don't even know what to ask for.

Thanks for any help you may have.

Teresa

Have you tried Katrinas book in the store. It will give you the basics of using a flash. Also her "get me off auto" would give you some info on setting your camera to get the best shot with the available light (changing iso, apeture, and shutter speed combo).

As a person who is trying for the third time to use her external flash well, I can only say that it's complicated. Be sure you always bounce the flash off a neutral wall or ceiling is one good tip I can pass on, however. Also, learn how to tune down the power of the flash. Very often they are way too strong at max power. You also need to give some thought to flash sync speed and iso. Many speedlights don't allow you to go over a 1/250 shutter speed, and even if they do, you have to learn how to do it. You might want to look at the Lightscoop, a $25 attachment that fits over the flash on your camera and allows you to mirror the flash away from the subject and therefore bounce it. Good luck!

Another thing to think about is that a lot of Synagogues and churches don't allow flash photography during ceremonies or masses. Check with them first.
Is the Bat Mitzvah during the day? Check to see if the synagogue has some natural light coming in. Then you could look into renting a really good lens with a fixed aperture. That would help you a lot!
Here's a good article on using flash

Good luck and have fun!

Default Flash

Thanks for your input. I am really excited to take on the challenge of learning how to use the flash. I have completed classes at the technical college for photography so I feel comfortable with metering light. I just have never really needed a flash until now.

I also wanted to share I found some field guide books @ the B&N to help with the flash as well. I really like books with pictures and guides verses manuals . I will only really need to set it 2x during the event. So hopefully it will go smoothly.

Thanks everyone. Have a great day. Teresa
