Default Extension tubes and focus issues

I recently purchased the kenko extension tubes, ok I've had them for 3 days, so it is probably me and not the tubes. Can someone give me some pointers on how to use them. So far I have only tried them on my 50mm, having huge focusing issues....continuously searching.

I am just getting some extension tubes tomorrow actually, so we can compare notes then.

What I do know, is that when you do macro, they also recommend manual focusing.

Also you kinda set your focus point and then move your body in and out until you are in focus.

I am not sure if that helps. I am not good at explaining.

I will get back to you after I try out mine.

The extension tubes with your 50mm require A LOT of light. The more light you have the easier focusing will be.

You have to get close to your subject and perhaps even consider manual focus. When I use them I literally find myself holding my breath. It is a bit of a workout to hold steady enough to get the shot and retain focus.

You can also try shooting with a tripod to get more steadiness.

Start with your smallest tube and then play with the longer one once you get the hang of it.

Also, if you have a longer lens, try with it. You'll find it much more forgiving.

Have fun and keep us posted!

I just got these a week or so ago and I LOVE them! I've found that I do best when I use manual mode, focus by "moving my body" (like Aino suggested) and like Katrina, I hold my breath a lot. I'm loving the pics I'm getting without having to spend the money for a macro lens. Hope you love them, too.

Oh this is getting me excited!!

I am getting TODAY with DHL a Tamron 90mm macro, extension tubes, a ball-head for my tripod and a couple of other goodies - and I can't wait to play now!!

Now, if I only could find some time in the day to play.

I have the 90mm Tamron Aino and you will have the same issues described above. The focus can be really hard, so I usually use manual, it's just easier that way. Other than that it's a fun lens. Congrats on your new goodies Perfect for all those little baby parts

Yeah! Got it all today - didn't really get to play much this afternoon - got too dark. But the lens is a wonder - incredibly sharp!! I used it with the flash and the soft diffuser thing I got - which works really great too.
Turns out I can't really use the extension rings with the macro lens, because it doesn't have an aperture ring as I thought it would (the very newest Tamron 90mm lenses for Nikon come without this, just like the ones for Canon). And I didn't get the more expensive Kenko tubes which have an electrical connection.

But I can still use them with my other lenses. If I can figure out how to use them. Will have to try them out this weekend.

Have you figured out something new Angela?

No not really Aino, I haven't had much time to play. I went out at lunch today and picked up some gerbera daisies for my office and practiced a little bit using Katrina's advice above. I'm not completely happy with the shots I have, but I'm quickly finding that it takes a lot of patience. Maybe I'll take the flowers home with me and pull out the tripod.
