want a new camera

I want a "big girl" camera so badly but have no idea what to look for and of course price is a big issue, I thought I had one of my embroidery machines sold and could start looking but the lady backed out at the last minute.
a friend has a sony digital that looks like a regular 35mm and it takes wonderful pics, she is going to check the mode number for me later on....
any suggestions for me

I want one too. I want it now! I've finally convinced DH to get one duty free before we go to NZ in June. Means I can't go shopping until the 19th May (to get the GST back here in Australia you can buy up to 30 days before you leave the country). We initially looked at a Canon 1000d, but now looking at either a 450d or a 500d.

Good luck with your shopping. If I lived in the states I'd have my new camera now - what costs $1000 here is half that price over there.
