Default fine vs superfine

My camera right now is set on fine picture mode. When would I want superfine? Or should I use superfine?

The higher the quality of your initial image, the more wiggle room you have for cropping and editing later. Like Jen, I always use the highest possible size & quality, because I never know when I'll take an irreplaceable photo that I'll want to crop down. The only reason to use less than the best is if you are running out of room on your memory card or really, really cramped for space on your hard drive, but the better answer to those problems is more/bigger memory cards (I always carry spares) and a bigger hard drive or external drive. Memory is cheap; memories are priceless.

Thanks! That's kind of what I was thinking - SF being better for enlarging and all that. I usually don't do much with pictures - 4 x 6 prints and cropping down from there with a paper trimmer but it's good to have that option (and a better print) if something comes along I'd like to enlarge.
I do have a 4G card. It's got over 400 pics on it now and room for over 200 more on the fine setting. I need to download them off the card and organize them.

Start thinking in RAW if your camera supports it.

How do I know if it does? (I'm thinking it doesn't but....) Right now, I have no idea where the manual is. I tried to find it yesterday.

You can always google your camera name + manual and read it online if you can't find it

Yeah, I did that and one place I went to yesterday tried to load a virus.
I just did a quick google for my camera and raw. It doesn't unless you get a hack for it. I'm good, I'll pass. LOL

Was this for your Canon? Did you try the Canon site?

No it wasn't on the canon site but I did go there. I don't think I could find a manual on it. That's okay, I'll find it sooner or later and I prefer to have paper books. I did find some websites that gave me good information on my camera that I could actually understand decently. LOL

I resisted this for a long time. But now I always shoot in RAW, and it's amazing how much control I have over the final outcome. I love it. The files are huge, but Laura has good advice about that.
