Default How I Learned To Shoot

One of the ways I've learned photography is through play. Seriously, silly, crazy, moving of dials, buttons, and switches. Setting up situations to see how I could capture them.

Sometimes I can only do that at night when Ian has gone to bed and I have a little quiet time to myself.

So last night I did just that...and well, I got some fun results. Probably more befitting of Halloween than the Holidays!

If you get a chance, check this post on my blog and see if you can tell me how I took it?! Just a fun quiz for a Wednesday morning!

Post here or there!

I'll post the photo to flickr tomorrow so you can see how I did it!

This is not only fun Katrina, but a good learning experience! I can only watch and take note for now and try to figure it all out.

John Greengo a photographer, has been doing this to our group in his show, and I'm amazed at how many clever folks out there can guess the answers correctly, I'm not one of them I'm afraid.

I will just wait for the answer so I don't embarrass myself trying to guess....lol. But I will say I did the very same thing a few nights ago. Trying to get a good picture of my tree with the lights on and trying to get that sparkle/twinkle with the lights. Problem for is I have a white tree with white lights this year. Any suggestions Katrina?

I would use a tripod if trying to capture this shot?

Can you all see the weirdness in the photo too? Or does it blend in too much?

And Aino, you are welcome to visit my living room anytime you'd like!

Katrina... love the photo! And, I'm guessing tripod, long exposure, too. And, I do see a "ghost" in front of the mantle... is that weird?

Let's see... tripod, long exposure and a timer... you stood in front of the fireplace for a few seconds and then walked away ??? It will be interesting to see how close everyone comes to guessing :-) The part I can't figure out is the lights to the left, next to the tree ?? Is that a reflection off a window?

The Ghost of Katrina's Past? Ha ha! Great ghosts alive, I think you used a pretty dang long exposure and walked into the frame for a second and hopped back out. Very cool and copy worthy, too.

What a fun challenge!!! We should all try our hand at submitting tricky "guess how" pics!
Katrina, I LOVE your living room and photo above the mantle.... i'm guessing the same as everyone else- tripod, long exposure, small aperature and you walked into the frame for a few seconds (but not long enough!!!)

I had to go back to see the Ghost of Christmas Present...and I want to know why she isn't blurred or are these two images blended/merged? (I haven't used camera settings since the 70s.)

Beehive50 you've got great eyes! I clicked on the image for a better look and there is a person ( I think Katrina) in the shot. I think heather might be right you must have used a rather long exposure to get you perfectly in the shot with out a in or out trail.

I just want to know how to get a pic of my tree like that without all the noise, lol.

I didn't see Katrina until after her post about "trickery" then I went back and looked and saw her! That is so cool!

tri-pod and long exposure ... this reminded me about "ghost" pictures my oldest took his senior year when he was taking photography. He had great fun playing with my rebel (which I had just gotten and only took photos on auto). He took a bunch of pictures using my daughter and having her walk around ... they had a great time! My daughter is taking photography right now. Same teacher, they learn all sorts of cool things to do, but not about aperature or shutter speed or ISO or anything else, just tricks.

So cool Katrina...the only thing I would add to all the above answers(long exposure, timer, tripod) is high ISO. Very very cool.

Your mantle looks wonderful..I love the presents!

I'm going to ad one more "trick" possibility...
Did you bounce your flash? I see the shadows on your daily page that is the same room and light but different vantage point. And that's my guess!
