Default Underwater Camera Suggestion

My Son would like an underwater digital camera for Christmas. I see that Olympus has a few that look good. I don't really want to spend $350 for the new 12mp, but would be interested in the $150 to $200 range. I am not sure if you get better results using a digital camera with the external casing or if you can go with one of the newer all in one underwater cameras? Any input would be appreciated!

I have a slightly older version of this one OLYMPUS Stylus Tough 6000 Blue 10.0 MP 2.7" 230K LCD 3.6X Optical Zoom Waterproof Shockproof 28mm Wide Angle Digital Camera Works great for a point and shoot.. water resistant and shock resistant.. Whatever one you get I would strongly suggest that you get the wrist strap/flotation which is usually bright yellow and will hold the camera above water should you drop it. A friend of mine lost her's the first time out... dropped it in a lake and couldn't find it... It's called a Floating Foam Strap and is usually listed under accessories DonnaNJ

If you'd like I can post a couple of pictures we've actually taken with it when I get home tonight.

Donna,

Wow, those are pretty good for a little point and shoot. I like your idea about the wrist guard, floatation device also! Thanks for sharing your photos. I appreciate it.

You are both very welcome... I'm glad to be able to help. I should have mentioned earlier just so you know.. the thing with these waterproof cameras is that you do have to clean them after you take them in the water.. my 12 year old (the one in the last pic) is the primary user of this camera so I always make sure to walk him thru the steps. With the Olympus it's a very simple procedure.. wash in a basin of cold water, dry and leave out to air cry completely but very important especially when you take it in salt water. Enloy !!!!

Seriously I am again very thankful to you as, the way you showed me here to wash this camera is no doubt very serving as I have already decided to get this for me and after getting this it is like a good brief I come to know.

Thanks!
