Default What settings should I use?

O.K. Staff development day tomorrow, so no school and we are either going bowling or indoor putt putt golfing. Both will have that funky lighting.

So... I want to shoot OFF auto... If I shoot in Aperture Priority mode, what do you think the best Aperture & ISO settings would be? Or should I shoot in Shutter Priority mode? Then what?

I am such a novice. Sigh. I really wish we could just implant a chip in our brain for whatever skill we wished we had... cooking, photography, neurosurgery.

Well, if I were you, I would shoot in RAW so anything, in regards to lighting, can be fixed. If you are wanting to freeze motion then shooting in shutter mode might be your best bet. If you are wanting to focus on your subject and blur out the background then aperature would be your best bet. Do you have a speed light that you are using? What lens are you using? I bet you might have to go up to 800 ISO, but it's hard to say without looking at the lighting! HTH!

What Joey said

Bowing alley lighting is DIFFICULT!

If you have a speedlight I'd bounce it off the ceiling or side wall. Otherwise, if it was me I'd shoot aperture priority with my largest aperture (smallest f/ #) with a high ISO and make sure my shutter speed sticks somewhere around 1/125. Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

You can shoot with a wide aperture and still get more in focus by leaving plenty of space between you and your subject. KWIM?

I was thinking of some shots you could take if you went bowling that I wanted to share.

Instead of trying to freeze the motion of bowling, perhaps taking a side photo during the bowler's last step while their arm moves through to release the ball would create some cool blurred motion. I would focus the bowler's face. Or a close up of the ball with the bowler's face in the background (blurred or in focus) would be cool. A photo of all the bowler's shoes would be a fun shot too. Now watch, you will go play golf instead! Good luck! I look forward to seeing the pics!

All your bowling ideas makes me want to take my kids out to an alley tomorrow and shoot away, but alas I must go to work.

Okay, no help here because I always chicken out with the camera and bowling alley parties. I have some wonderful memories though, with the handy camcorder that I used to take instead.
Sorry no help, but I am taking notes from everyone! The pizza eating after bowling seems to come out good though!

Thanks ladies! I am going with Joey's suggestion of shooting in RAW - which means I will just HAVE to upgrade my LR to the latest version (as my current version doesn't recognize RAW format) and I am going with Katrina's large aperture/high ISO suggestions. I will let you know how it goes!
