Default Camera advice

So, I just broke my 2nd point and shoot camera in one month. I've considered buying a higher end point and shoot with some manual controls because my husband is not keen on the idea of me spending more money on cameras right now since I've been so careless with my others (honest mistakes they were!). However, if I'm going to do that, I keep thinking that I should go for the Nikon D40 which would only be about a hundred dollars more...but my question is, will I outgrow the D40 and be lusting for a D90 in a years time because then I will be left with no point and shoot just two DSLRs... My personal opinion is that I will be able to grow with the D40 for at least a couple years, but if anyone else has gone through this and has any advice, I would really appreciate it. In the mean time I'm listing all my personal belongings on ebay so I can pay for it without any DH input. lol

If you have the money and want to learn manual soon, I'd say go with the D90. I had my D40 for almost 2 years. As long as it was on auto I was OK. As soon as I learned Manual I got frustrated. The D90 has two separate wheels for controlling the aperture and shutter speed. It makes it so much easier. Actually all the settings are easier for me to use on the D90. But I get easily frustrated with electronic devices, lol.
