I know there are lots of opinions on which one is better. I have a Nikon D40 and I love it and I am thinking of upgrading. I have noticed that Canon gives a crisper photo. Is this due to lense or camera. I would love to hear why you love your camera and why you think it is the best.
Thanks in advance!

Another Canon girl... most professionals I know say that they are just about dead even these days. It really is just personal preference. I have used my canon since college and like Katrina I came from film =D

Nikon here too. I think if you already have lenses for your Nikon you would be better off staying with the brand unless you want to change all the lenses too

Definitely a lens issue.
I have Nikon D90 and think it is perfect for my needs. I read once that Canons digital cameras are known to sharpen in-camera just a tad more than Nikon - so that Nikon's photos come out a tiny bit softer than Canon's. It is a personal preference thing. |

I use a Canon 50D, I got it as a gift for Xmas last year, and I LOVE it! But, I don't think there is a lot of difference either, maybe look at them and see what feels more comfortable to hold, as the buttons are located differently on them, maybe that will help make your choice eaiser! Good luck and happy shopping!

Thanks for all the input and I was soooooo hoping you would say it is a lens issue. I just made the investment of a 50mm!! I have been using the basic (not so great) one that came with the camera because I just made the switch to manual. I have been setting my camera to auto for sooo long and I knew I had a lot to learn. Now that I think I have control of that I bought a new lens and a flash

I just made the switch to Nikon D90 and bought the 50mm lens at the same time. I had one on my Canon XTi (that I traded in) -and it really is a great lens. For such a crummy photographer as me, I need all the help I can get! Altho, I am improving because of Katrina's "Captured Through The Lens" course. (shameless plug for Katrina!). My next dream lens (and I think I'll take the plunge shortly) is the 18-200 with the second generation of VR. The reviews say its wonderful.

I think you did the right choice. I'm a Canon user, but I've heard so many great things about Nikon as well. Lenses is what you should use your money on. I use a Sigma 50 mm f/1.4 almost all the time. I also have the 70-200 f/2.8 IS which is a big investment, but it produces really beautiful photos. (Canon 40D body). There are a couple of other lenses I'd want to buy if I had the money. Currently it's the new 100mm macro f/2.8 USM IS that I really, really want, but it is very expensive, so I would have to win the lottery first. A 18-50 (or similar focal length) f/2.8 is also a great investment if you take a lot of photos indoor. Although I know that many pros skip the zoom lenses and buy just primes (single focal length lenses). A 30 mm would be a good choice then.
Good luck with your new lens! You're going to love it. :-) |

Well, I did it! I'm picking up my new lens -the Nikon 18-200 AF-VRll today at the post office. I bought it new on ebay for $100 less than retail from a 100% seller. Who could resist that! I can't wait to get it outta the box and on the camera a start playing. I need to practice because our big trip is coming up. We've planned 3 days in Florence, Italy before getting on board the Grand Princess for a 12 day Mediterranean cruise. I hope I've become good enough to take some interesting photos. Katrina, this will be the acid test of your 2 courses I've taken. I hope I got out of it the things I need to know about taking great photos.

I've been having this debate for awhile. I'm trying to decide between the Nikon D90 and the Canon 50D. The one thing I have noticed is that the Canon is very heavy. I have very tiny hands, so this will probably be a problem for me.

Whooo-Hooo! I'm thrilled to bits! Just got my new Nikon lens (18-200) and I couldn't be happier. What a difference to the wide angle and telephoto of the kit lens. I've played with it outside, after taking the same shot with the kit lens and it is soooo much wider and closer...and so clear. I also picked up the battery pack and two filters for it so I really, really look professional now. Hope I can justify it and not take 20 minutes to get a shot off whilst thinking about all my settings. I swear its like standing over a golf ball and 37 things go thru your mind before you get the nerve to take a swing! LOL
Giddy with pleasure...gotta go play...
