You can go to dgrin.com and search the forums in the Sports section---then maybe narrow it down to cycling. You may see good shots, get good ideas, read about settings, and that kind of thing. I haven't been there in a long time, but I know they probably have something.

Denise, your photos are always great! You'll do fine! Just out of curiosity I clicked on your 365 project icon and read that you were struggling too. And then the entry... this might save my 365 project. I love shutterboo's list. If you don't mind I might copy it and use it for the next little while. Having a place or purpose really helps. BTW-love your shower photos and the tile job is great.

You guys are so nice, thank you for the pep talk!! Katrina, they already have 22 motorcycles filled with either professional photogs, emts or race people- but i'll put the word out for next year if they do it. I just lucked out tho, since my hubby's team is the police department team and one of the motor officers has been "race" certified and the guys claimed his backseat before the pros could. But i'll see how they get people!
Deanie- I'm glad you found Shutterboo- she's funny, talented and that list comes in handy right about now!! |

The event was Saturday- I am halfway thru 720 pics... and am pleasantly surprised I'm not deleting them all!
I learned a few things in regard to photographing sports events: 1. I must have my very own motorcycle... just cuz 2. At the finish line, or the top of a tough climb, change to a zoom lens to capture expressions. I didn't think of that and saw some photos on the event website that made me wish i did... 3. I used A priority, S priority and Auto settings - I need to get a better grasp of AutoFocus when not in Auto mode. I missed shots due to lame focusing issues. And last but not least: 4. Get over the inferiority complex! My little Sony A100 took just as good shots as some of those posted on the event web gallery- (if not, ahem, a little better!). I still want a 28-300 tho... I've attached 3 shots- they are low res web versions so not as crisp but u get the idea! Thanks for the referral to that website, Sarah- it started me a web path of lotsa info! |

Denise, those are awesome! I love the lensbaby effect of the narrow DOF on the upper left picture, and the curve in the road lends to great composition. I would have been totally chicken to have done a project like that! Great job. The problem with the Sony lenses (that I've run into) has always been the focusing problems; either not focusing fast enough, or hunting all the time on long focal lengths. But you sure conquered that problem!

These are super, Denise! I think each new kind of photoshot we do helps us to learn and be more intuitive about settings for the next big challenge.
