Question Zoom Creep?

I have a Nikon D80 and keep my Nikon 18-200mm VR 3.5-5.6 G ED on as my everyday lens.
This past weekend I did a lot of walking around town so kept it on my shoulder rather than in my bag. But I found that after a while the lens kept 'extending' - becoming longer (sorry about the inadequate words to explain ).
So to any Nikon users with that or a similarly heavy lens, or really any camera users with a reasonably heavy lens, is this what is referred to as 'Zoom Creep', or is this something I need to get fixed??
Thanks for any ideas or opinions

Donna, thanks for posting your question. I don't know the answer to your question, but I have the same problem with one of my Canon lenses. Waiting anxiously to hear ...

i have the same problem with my 70-300mm canon lens. i just figured it was the weight of the lens. i'd love to know if this is a problem i should have looked at, as well.

It is a problem with many but not all zoom lenses. I've read that it is a design flaw and your lens maker will most likely say that happens to all zoom lenses.

One funny work around I just found was to put a large rubber band the same diameter as your lens around the barrel of the lens. It holds it in place but still lets you move it!

My tamron 28-300 has a lock on it so it won't do this! It is annoying when I forget to lock it.

My tamron also has a lock & it works great - unless I forget to unlock it before taking photos. You might check to see if your zoom has a lock - I had the lens for 4 years before I found out about the lock - talk about feeling totally unobservant.

I don't know either, I was told it was normal at the camera store I buy my supplies. I have the canon 28-200 and it does it all the time, it drives me crazy!!
