I have a Canon Vixia HG20 that's great. It shoots standard and HD. It records on the hard drive or card.

What you want to make sure of though is that her computer (video card, etc) will have enough "umph" to edit and process the video. (I use Roxio for editing BTW)

Sorry, haven't looked at video cameras in a number of years. However, if she is even close to the photographer you are, I hear the Canon Mark II 5D (?) is being in such demand because it is better than most hd video cameras and has so much larger range for lenses than any video camera making it "the" choice atm.

If you are wanting long range lenses, then you need to go big guns, but if you just want to record some shots have you seen the HD flip??! It is the size of a cell phone, and so easy to use. LOVE mine and will never carry a large video recorder around again. It doesn't have much zoom, but that is what I carry my camera for anyhow. Very inexpensive as cameras go, and no worry if it gets lost on a long trip--takes AA batteries, and I carry it everywhere. The program is on the device itself, and it has USB so it just plugs in to any computer and you can upload from there to You Tube even. EASY.

Just bought the Canon FS100, very small and a lovely colour purple! Still using the 'Easy' option - have to read the manual yet... :-)
I prefer the use of cards above a HD, heard that the HD are very sensitive for shocks while recording.
