Default File number conflict ???

Ok, so I guess I have been taking a lot of pictures!!LOL with both of my cameras and now I am running into a problem with the file numbers overlapping. I discovered it tonight when I saved one of my images from LR into the file where I store them for making into layouts. There was already one there! I suppose the problem would have shown up when I uploaded except one camera was saving a jpeg and the other was a CR2 file.
So what do you do to avoid conflict from two neck and neck cameras? Is there some naming convention that can be changed in the cameras?

Thanks for any advice.

If you're importing using LR, you can use the Import window properties to change what the files are named when saved to your HD. I use the format "Date-CustomName-Sequence" It makes it easy to find things and when I open a photo for a layout, I know what day it was taken by the file name at the top of the PS window.

Thanks, Cassie. This is interesting. So you don't keep the camera sequence at all?? I guess that opens the world of cataloging into an infinite set of options. CustomName is like an event name or do you use it some other way??

Right, I don't use the camera file names. It's probably viewed by some as extra work, but I like to import my photos in groups (sometimes this requires being selective with the little check boxes at the import stage). Then I give a custom name associated with the content of the photos, somthing like Date_Jacks5thBirthday_sequence. For the longest time I was putting the underscores in, but lately I've been WILD and leaving them out and including spaces, so it's more like Date_Jacks 5th Birthday_sequence.

Here's an example:

Patricia, a .nef is Nikons RAW file. Your's would be cr2 or whatever Canon's proprietary RAW format is. HTH!
