Default Your opinion about a flash please.

I have a Sony DSLR Alpha 100. I have two lenses - the one that came with it and a telephoto lens. For what I do these lenses seem just fine until I get better at photography. Right now I use the automatic setting.

For Christmas my DH bought me a flash for it. I have not used a flash very often and I guess I was just wondering if you use a flash very much or not. I was wondering if I should keep the flash or return it and get another lens? I would love some opinions on this.

Thanks so much.

I don't use my flash very often but I love having it just in case I do need it. During the darker winter months I really do need it more often.

I'd want either a flash or a really fast lens (f/1.8 or so).

I just got a flash as well. I have never liked using the on board flash on my cameras, but an external flash that can swivel so you can bounce the light is really a great tool. There is a learning curve--I've been reading up on flash use for weeks--but I think it will be worth it. There are times when you just need more light, even with a fast lens (and I love my 50 mm f/1.8 for low light settings). If you learn how to use the flash, you'll get some photos you simply couldn't get otherwise.

I couldn't imagine not having a flash. I don't know about Sony flashes, but Nikon (and Canon too), they have the ability to be used off camera as well, which makes the possibilities endless! Sometimes there is just not enough good natural light. Sometimes you need fill light. Many many pluses for flash.

Though, I will say, a good understanding of exposure is of most importance... and I was finally able to wrap my brain around it by using a prime like the 50mm 1.8 (and this lens is inexpensive for Nikon and Canon).

while it's a pain, i use my external flash (always with the Gary Fong lightsphere) a lot because the photos are just so darned much better -- both in the house and outside when I need fill flash.
