Default Canon 50D Woo Hoo!!

I'm so excited I had to share! I got the Canon 50D for my Birthday/Christmas - and I'm so excited!! I got the kit lens 18-200mm with it, plus a used 50mm 1.4 - that was a bonus to get it used, since I was planning on buying it new!

Now for my question, after I get used to it, any suggestions on what next "piece of glass" (lens) I should get?? They had a couple used lenses available at the photo show where I bought my new gear, but I just wasn't sure so I had to wait.

Woohooo Congrats Christine.

I think the best answer about more lenses is actually a question to you. What types of photos do you want to take most? Indoors, outdoors? Portrait, candid? Sports? Landscape? Moving kiddos?

That will help make the best decision!

Definitely moving Kiddos, indoor and outdoor portraits - those would be the top 3. But of course as the kiddos get older it would be sports and then when they move out - landscapes!!

But all kidding aside my next lens would be for moving kiddos - indoor. Any suggestions?

The best advice I've seen about adding lenses is to wait until you really see a hole in your collection that you want to fill. Your 50mm 1.4 will be super indoors for moving kids, and your kit lens has a huge range, so I'd really hold off until you have a better sense for what will make the most sense.

I thought I was all about nature photos and would want a long zoom, but the more pictures I take, the more I realize how much I love portraits and candid people, so the top lenses on my wish list have changed a lot in 6 months. (I've a hankering for the 85mm f/1.8 right now.) Had I bought another lens right away, I think I might have made an expensive mistake.

Have fun with the new camera! and congrats! (I love my 40D.)

We are thinking of buying the 50D-but my husband reads every review and it is not rated as highly as the comparable Nikon. (Only by a hairsbreath...) So please keep us up to date as to how you like it so I don't have to wait for the next canon to come out!

What fun you are going to have! It will be so interesting to see just what you have to say about your new 50D.

...that's wonderful!! Have fun learning, Christine!

ITA with Laura regarding the 'next' lens. I think it really depends. For me, I LOVE my 10-22 lens. After I bought that particular lens, I realized that wide angle is my match. I have rarely changed lens since—I literally miss the wide angle aspect when I do. It isn't the fastest for indoor, but it works for me. Did I mention I LOVE that lens? Best of all, I haven't had the urge to purchase another lens since.

Enjoy your 50D!!
