Red face Help

I just purchased a Canon Rebel XTi. My lens is a Canon 18-55 mm 1:3.5 - 5.6. I also have a Canon 50-180mm (I think, it is at home). Anyway, what I want to do with my camera (if it is possible) is to take a picture of something or someone but have the background be blurry, not just a little blurry be very blurry. I hope this makes sense to you! Is this possible with this camera and my lens? Thanks so much!!

To get the background blurry, you want a shallow depth of field, which is from a large aperture. Use the smallest number f-stop your lens can go on aperture priority...f 1.8, 2.8, 3.5...etc. It would probably also help to have the subject far away from the background, too.

I agree. With a Rebel XTi you will want to be in "Av" mode (P, Tv, Av, M). The smaller the number following "f/..." the blurrier your background will be. Have fun!

On the auto side, the the icon that looks like a little flower will give you a shallow DOF, too. Use the 50-180 for better results - that focal length will give you better blur.
