Hey Ladies!
I have a girlfriend who accidentally shot in RAW with her Nikon D90. She doesn't have the software on her computer to support RAW so she is sending me the files so I can turn them to jpeg for her. She was unable to burn them to a disc so I blindly walked her through the process of putting them back onto her camera. When she goes to look at the files with her camera, the camera says there are no images in the folder. My question to you is this: would her camera be able to detect the raw files that we tried to put back onto her camera? I hope this makes sense! TIA! |

They're not on the memory card?
I hope she didn't reformat the card. I wonder if she just dragged them to the camera- not making sure that the files were put into the correct folder / file structure?

I'm assuming she could not burn the files to a disc because there were too many, or the file sizes were too big? It's really best if she could get them onto a disc for you, though! Could she put 1/2 or 1/3 or 1/4 of the files onto a disc and send them to you to test out? How many files does she have total?
About files: You would be putting the files from the computer back onto the memory card, not onto the camera, although I understand you probably have the card installed in the camera and are hooking the USB cable from computer:camera and just sending the files the other way. The camera WILL detect any photographic files on a card, so if it can't 'see' them, they probably are not there, or if they ARE there, they must be in some structure or format. I have never tried to load "backwards" and put files from the computer back onto a memory card, but I know it can be done. But yes, the camera SHOULD be able to detect the files if they were correctly uploaded and in the right format for files. Are you sure she did the process correctly? Can she try it again? But really, I'd try to encourage her to try again with the disc burning process, even if she can only put a few files on at a time. Good luck & I hope it all works out! Jennifer |

One other idea...could she try going to the Nikon website? They might have a free or 30-day trial version of their s/w that can, among other things, convert Nikon's raw NEF files into .jpgs. Also, the Adobe website usually has 30-day free trials of Photoshop; she could download that and you could talk her through the process to convert her photos that way!
That might be simpler than trying to transfer all the files... just an idea! good luck! Jennifer |

Even lightroom- she can even install the color profiles for the Nikon D90, and export to jpg so that they are looking their best BEFORE converting.
Or she could send you the card :-)

Thank you so much for your suggestions, ladies! I am thinking that she tried to burn too many to a disk at a time. (never thought to ask that question) I am going to have her try to burn only a portion at a time.
I would have her try a 30 day free trial of any software, but her computer is out of memory, hence her need to get these HUGE files off of her computer! Thanks again! I greatly appreciate you both taking the time to help me help a friend! |
