Red face Arrrrrrgh! guess what I did

Oh my, this afternoon I went to put my camera SD card into the slot on the side of my iMac, and momentarily got distracted, and I slipped it into the DVD slot....

I shouted to Jim, guess what I've done... we called up a (fairly) local Apple dealer, who said they would try and retrieve it today, anyway, it only took them about and hour, $75's later... its back home and working...

I wont be doing that again..

Im just about to slip my SD card into the right slot, to see if its working ok..

Oh my gosh, so easy to do! Just the sort of thing I can imagine myself doing :-0

Glad it was sorted, though at a cost!

Meep, so glad it was ok, hope the SD card is too!

I'm always scared I'll do something like that, and Tom watches me all the time, I've caught him a few times trying to connect the camera cable to the computer.

Wow, my Macbook doesn't even have a card slot, so at least that is not something I could do, otherwise I could see myself do the same thing.... I'm so glad you got it fixed!

Janet, there is a"final resort" option of using a paperclip to get a cd/dvd to eject when it won't but I've never needed to go there. (This idea comes from a bunch of the Mac geek chatboards. I don't know that Apple lists this as one of 'their' options! but hey...)

If turning the iMac sideways and seeing if it would fall out? Doing this while hitting the eject key on the keyboard? just to the right of the f12 key on a wired keyboard?

Now I know you won't do this again...LOL.. but those are also options for when a dvd or cd won't eject. I'm so glad now I no longer have SD cards ...

Guess what's been in my CD drive for 3 days now? The darn drive is less than 1/2" away! lol I haven't had time to take mine in.

Kelly, if you tilt and shake will it fall out - while holding down the eject button?

Oh Maureen, really? That really scares me since I would be shaking my brand new hard drive. :O\ I read in some forums about people getting them out with things like tape and paperclips, etc. . . but, they warned about damaging the disk drive. I'm afraid to touch it. lol

Maureen, Once I got the iMac back, (I could'nt think straight at the time) I said to my DH, we should have tried turning it on its side, he said that the technician tried it, but it didnt work..
I'm not sure that I could poke a paper clip inside it, Im too afraid of causing even further damage (and further costs)..
I swear I could have vomited (not a good look believe me), my precious new, well fairly new, iMac.. I even managed to retrieve the pics from the SD card, they weren't even that important either, they were pics I'd taken for Katrina's workshop..

You know the saying 'you live and learn' well, I've learnt....

Ok, my son held the imac sideways (after my arms started shaking from holding it too long) lol. . . and I tried to see if I could feel the card with a piece of card stock . . . while his girlfriend helped out with the eject button. no luck. When I told Cassie what happened she laughed at me and now I'm afraid I'm laughing, too.

Well it should make you feel better to know that I didn't even know there WAS an SD slot on the side of my Mac until I read this :-(

Janet . . . that really stinks! I think that I would be taping up that SD slot.

Me too Donna!! I just looked on the side under the CD/DVD slot and was amazed that the card slot was there. In my case it is a good thing that I didn't know before, because I would have done just as you and Kelly did for sure.

Glad you were able to retrieve it without damage to anything other than your bank account!

Kelly . . . I hope that you will have a similar good luck story when you take your's in.

Donna and Mollie, that card reader is a very nice feature. The problem is the DVD drive is actually a little wider/looser than the card slot so all you have to do is get close and that card it gone. lol Like was said earlier, it's not something you'd do twice. :O)

Kelly, I might just do that 'put a piece of tape over the DVD slot' I do burn DVDs regularly though for my DH, could get abit messy..

I should see if there's a cover or something for it.. I hate to say this but "Im soooo pleased to hear that Im not the only one who has done this'

I think the only reason I've not done this is that I always connected my camera with the cord when I still used a camera. I'm wondering if "I" have a SD slot. I've never looked closely at that side of the screen...I just feel with my fingers and shove the dvd in!

Girls, why don't you spring the $50 and get an external card reader that plugs into a USB? It would be cheaper than taking it in to have your SD card removed, and you'd still have the convenience of having it right handy.

I had one for years, but didn't pay anything near $50. I was just excited that there was one less thing with a wire connected to it cluttering my desk.

I am glad it is fixed, Janet - I am just sorry you are out on some cash now! I think we have all done something similar to this. I ruined my cd drive on my brand new computer by writing on a cd with what I thought was a sharpie. The ink messed the drive up and I had to get it replaced. I felt so dumb!
