Cool Overdrive (free app for e-books)

Yesterday, I downloaded a free app to my iPad called Overdrive. Maybe, you've all already heard about it, but, it was a new idea to me. Anyway, it allows you to download books from your local library (if they are participating) using your library card.

Search for a library using ZIP Code.

Browse titles to find an available book.

Enter library-card number and download book.

Book expires after seven, 14 or 21 days, depending on the library.

Yesterday, to try it out, I searched for titles I want to read. I put myself on a waiting list for three books. I will be notified by email when those books are available for download. I found one book I wanted that was available for immediate download. It was easy to do. I have 21 days to read the book.

Obviously, if I'm in a hurry to download a popular title, I will still want to purchase e-books from Barnes & Noble (Nook) or iBook, but, I think it is cool that libraries are getting into this service, too.

some of the gals were talking about that feature before, it sounds really neat! If you are an ardent reader, that might just be an extra reason to get an Ipad

I think this sounds amazing! So glad they made a system to make libraries join...

It is really cool. I can't wait until the Kindle books are library loanable, too.

I just finished reading Friendship Bread electronically. I checked out from my local library via Overdrive. It was terrific!

Life just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it?!

Yes, Sarah, it does! I love all the technological advances!

I'll have to see if Friendship Bread is available at my library.

Merr I don't tend to read a lot, I know, shame on me. But I do listen to talking books a lot in the car. Our library system has a similar thing for talking books, download to the computer and pop it into iTunes. I love it. So convenient, if say on a Sunday night I want to grab a book for the next day in the car.

I just got to download my first overdrive/library book to my nookcolor - overdrive and adobe digital editions is great for this... love that I can "borrow" books from my library while in my jammies in my office :-)

Jenn, I just downloaded another book...a cookbook by Rachel Ray. I was number 1 on the waiting list for that one. Now, I can really look at all the recipes in this cookbook for free. I am notorious for buying cookbooks on impulse and then never making any of the recipes. Since, I only get to keep this book for 21 days I'm hoping it motivates me to try a few of the recipes while I still have the book.

and, yes, browsing for books while in my jammies is a plus!
